I think owners spokesman was pretty clear in that press conference. He had to look over a couple of times for directions as to what he could say. Was even called out on it by a reporter. Fact is though, Kings not the guy to have as your public face. He trips over himself too much and is transparent in the context that he is omitting information....poorly.

Because they don't care, basically. Those considerations aren't important. It is why when the city reviewed CalgaryNext he price tag doubled.
This is only about flames owneshop and development partner building an ice district. Realigning roads, city infrastructure, zoning etc is someone else's problem

Probably because they want an opportunity to dominate the news cycle for the week. Friday is the traditional day for the release of bad news, because people ignore the news as they head off for their weekend. Release the news on Monday or Tuesday, and you have the people talking about it for the next three or four days.

Where's Freeway? He needs to make a post so I can click the thanks button for killing it on that question and the follow up.
Freeway: (paraphrasing) "So you want money that you don't have to pay back?"
King: *awkward silence following by anecdote about the Colosseum in Rome*
Freeway: "you didn't answer"
King: "I don't want to get pinned" *gets pinned*

If this press conference had a theme it would be "There is no Plan B"

I think the press conference theme was more "my cat's breath smells like cat food."

I asked about the development around the Saddledome. Lucas Meyer asked about the public money after me.

It has been said already several times, but the Flames also do not have a negotiating partner who is desperate to revitalize a desolate relic of the Cold War that is downtown Edmonton. The Edmonton deal does not work in Calgary because as a city environment Calgary is not on the same level as Edmonton.

And once the $185 million dollars is paid back are the prices of tickets going to go down $8?
Assume 19,000 seats x 273 dates (throw a rough usage number of 75%) x $8 = $41M / year. So it should only take 4.5 years to repay the $185M by ticket tax.
Now, certainly aside from 42 of those dates and some major concerts (say 20/year) a lot of those dates won't be full 19k capacity, but even at 50% for the remaining dates = $17M / year. Which would only take 11 years to pay back.

I mean, looking at the deal posted, unless I'm missing something, it seems fair to me.
Flames get full Ownership + 100% of revenue?
Seems good to me.
Someone tell me if I'm missing something that the Flames were wanting.

Actually it's funny because that lady soon after asked, what I assume, she thought was a relatively softball positive question about when we get to see the plans.
It just turned out they have nothing, so it ended up being a 89mph slider right between the shoulder blades.

King says 'just wait' and the Flames will offer their response next week - likely very early in the news cycle.
The Flames have flipped the negotiations from the boardroom into the public with the publication of their walking away. This decision isn't made recklessly. It's a calculated move.
|
I'm sure there was some strategy in mind here, but KK's performance basically amounted to calling in an air strike on their own position.
They really should have waited until they had their next proposal ready and could have shifted to the positive.
