Yeah, it's all personal anecdotes. All I know is that an episode of MASH mentioned the Calgary Stampede, not the Calgary oil boom.

It's almost as if most of the people Googling "Calgary..." would likely be locals interested in the local sports teams and local weather.

The conversation at this stage of the game is not about whether we need an arena or not...both the Flames and City (and most of us) agree that we do. The debate really is about the level of corporate welfare that we as tax payers should be willing to give to a private enterprise to have those things.

Thanks for playing.
Some people accept mediocrity, others strive for greater things. The Calgary I remember never sat on its laurels.

Great argument

I too have travelled all over Europe. I have found most people know Calgary for Olympics, Stampede, mountains, and also the Flames.
A border guard in Slovakia once took a look at my passport (in the 90's) and yelled "Robert Reichel! Calgary Flames!"
He was very excited.
The people that know the Stampede surprise me the most. Didn't think it registered too much in Europe.

I tech savvy person like yourself should know that google returns the thing searched for most by the ip address that is searching. Your filter bubble will of course show sports and weather first, that's obviously what you use it for.
People don't think that google is returning the same search results to everyone regardless of your browsing history or location, do they?

Calgary Stampede =/= Calgary Flames
I don't know why this is being used as an example of your position.
No one is saying anything about the Calgary Stampede.
Also, MASH? come on, its 2017

Yeah, I think it also depends on when you traveled and what the age of the person you're speaking to is. Most of the younger Australians and Brits I've talked to know the city for the Stampede and access to the mountains. Regardless, it's a pretty irrelevant debate.

And the price for that is now apparently $250- $300 million. Not worth it in my opinion.

It's easy to want great things for a city when you're a non-citizen with zero financial consequences.

You're telling me people don't want to publicly subsidize Horsecock?

Except I'm googling from the United States, on an American IP, coming from a large University with a shared IP space. Our machines revert back to a clean build on logout, so it isn't stored credentials or Google analytics coming into play. This is a fresh Google search. So when people want to learn about Calgary, from a remote location, and they are using Google, those are the first things that come up. The very first. If it makes you feel any better, the first returns for Edmonton are Oilers, weather and Journal. They don't even have anything as substantial as the Stampede to fallback on.

Okay but I don't think that actually disproves my point. Which people are most likely to be googling the city from a remote location, VPN, etc.? It's most likely going to be locals and expats.
