This isn't Nenshi, this is a municipality trying to avoid the pattern of bad arena deals for their cities.

Im curious which bad arena deal Calgary has ever entered into?

NHL hockey is a huge and valuable community asset. This is what had preserved this team here in its dire financial times of early 2000's - those greedy bastards (Hotchkiss, McCaig, Seaman, Edwards, Markin and Libin) putting their own money into the losing venture just to keep it here, in Calgary.
|
I have a hard time considering a venue that charges on average over $100 to get in (more in a new arena), and $20 for a Budweiser and ####ty stale popcorn (more in a new arena too) a community asset. It's a venue for the well off.

Empty office buildings right now. But that's right City continue on this path. At least San Diego, having lost its NFL team, still has its beaches and climate.

When its time to show your cards, the Flames will lose.
Nenshi and other councillors who side with him score points with at least 90% of Calgary citizens by taking a hard line against spending their money on hockey players and their owners. I'm assuming 100,000 people really care enough about the Flames in this city to worry about a threat that the team is sold and moved. And that is generous. And corporate Calgary has probably figured out that if the City pays for a substantial portion of the rink ... it is going to repaid to the City in the form of higher business tax or special commercial property tax levies. So I think the overwhelming majority of residents and taxpayers in this City support the position no municipal funding towards this.
Why can't the Flames find a corporate sponsor to fund the majority of this anyways in exchange for naming rights? Hmmm ... like the CNRL Centre.

Flames leave then we say good luck and wait for another team like Jets fans did. Pitty the Flames in that scenario, very few actual markets than can sustain a profitable hockey team in North America. NHL has tapped most of them and have struggling franchises all over the place. Their loss, #### Bettman

Lots of people who post here don't care about hockey.
Silver and Minnie are two off the top of my head. Pretty sure Silver has explicitly said he doesn't like hockey or the Flames.

Some people also don't like bowing down to the demands of wealthy owners who could give a damn about the city, all about money for them. That's how they got theirs in the first place

Well, it's gonna suck watching the Seattle Flames win the Cup in the next couple of years, and having to drive down there for the parade. But luckily I'm in Vancouver now, so at least it'll be an easy 2 1/2 hour trip for me.

You know what? I lived in Calgary for decades, probably longer than you've been alive, and my taxes probably put your dumb ass through school, so maybe consider that. it was my taxes contributed to the building of the Saddledome and probably the majority of the roads you take for granted. So please don't try and lecture me on paying taxes in the City of Calgary. I did my time and I paid more than my fair share. Hey, maybe some day you'll move on and be on a forum something like this one, makine comments about your old home town, and you'll have some snot nose tell you all the things you don't know about paying taxes in Calgary. Won't that be something? Something to look forward to!

If it was "all about the money" the owners would have moved on a long time ago
The Calgary Flames have not been a good investment
