The city has been working on a land swap ugh the stampede for land. Certainly the city knows that giving this land to CSEC for an arena was almost certainly on the table.
The cost of two blocks of land, and other infrastructure upgrades related to the area could easily be worth 9 figures. It is completely safe to say that the city was prepared to make a substantial offer, and the news reports today seem to confirm that.
It's obvious that the city was prepared to give public money if their was public benefit. The Flames' statement today is pretty clear in saying that they have no intention in giving the public any benefit - and yet wanted substantial public subsidy.

totally agree with New Era above and in his scenario the Flames will win. The Flames and the City will outlast Nenshi.
Nenshi's legacy? How bout the first sitting mayor in 40 years to be defeated?

so the Flames leave...
Calgary still has a old ass arena that isn't good enough to be a world class city in terms of entertainment...what then?
Not matter what I think a publicly funded stadium is in the future

I 'abandoned' mine back to the Flames this year. They are still available, at only slightly more than $22,000 for the year. I'm sure the flames will be happy to hear you want to pick them up.

I get that we don't want to bend over backwards with public funding, but what else does it go towards? A space bridge? A half a million dollar stick and stone art exhibit? A giant statue of a head in front of the bow building? I'd much rather spend public money on an arena (even if not a large sum) than on all that useless crap. For that vote alone I will not be voting Nenshi back in.

Holy crap!?! Where? I wanna go to space!
P.S. the Bow statue is privately built (but in exchange for increased building density)

I totally disagree. I am born and raised here and I really do think it's a question of what we want to be as a City. I could go on and on about my disappointments as a Calgarian with the way this City has been managed in the last 15 years or so. It takes 10 years to get an interchange built.
I don't trust Nenshi or Council to negotiate such an important deal.
Maybe we need a plebiscite or referendum on the matter. But it looks like this election may be just that.

It's better than saying, "I know she cheats on me, steals my money and treats me like ####, but I lover her and she'll leave me if I say anything."

I think the reality is Calgary will need to pay something to keep the flames. The flames proposal was bat#### crazy but it seems like Nenshis was just as bad if true.
Find some middle ground or put the lot of them on a rocket and fire it into the sun. Tie Bettman to the back by his nads.

again, a lot of blame pointed at Nenshi...
Can anyone actually verbalize why he is getting this blame? He has ONE vote just like any other Councillor.
Seems like the people that don't like Nenshi are simply directing their anger at him...
People can't seriously believe the City's proposal was singularly devised by Nenshi and Nenshi alone can they?
The City can't scratch their own ass unless the process is vetting by multiple stakeholders... but it's "Nenshi's Plan"....
ummmm right.

I don't recall any kind of confirmation from them although it was speculated in some quarters.

"It's not for the elites. It's not for the hockey players, not for the football players. It's for all of the citizens in our city," he said as he unveiled drawings that also showed several new condo and commercial towers and a hotel surrounding the new sports facilities.

You would think the people who don't want public money to be spent on a new arena would be happy. Flames asked for public money, Nenshi said no, Flames say okay we won't build a new arena. There done, no public money is going to be spent, and the Flames are still in Calgary for now. Isn't this exactly what the "no public money" crowd wanted?

Both sides are acting like idiots. Lock em in a room with no food and water until they come to a deal.
Or move the team and forget about having an NHL franchise here.

This city is already pretty dead, without the Flames there would be nothing to do on a Thursday night in January.
|
LOL. A tiny fraction of Calgary residents give a care about a Flames game on a Thursday in January. Theres a lot to do in this city. Life wont change much for most Calgarians when the Flames leave (admittedly, not for all, but for most.)

Ken King: Flames' owners no longer pursuing new arena with City of Calgary
The City and the Mayor have not negotiated in good faith. All of you can continue to point fingers at the CSEC, go ahead and bury your heads in the sand and drink the Mayor's koolaid. Someone must be handing out some CDC loving paste.
