The election is 5 weeks away. Almost all of Council is campaigning for re-election, so I don't think it's a big deal that talks will pick up after October 16. I also think almost all the City's attention in the next several weeks will be on the Amazon RFP response, which is due October 19.
It's good that the Mayor is putting his political capital now fully into the Victoria Park project - part of a much bigger revitalization of the area. With Stage 1 Green Line funding secured, focus will turn very quickly to getting this program going.

After watching the video, I think it will be a huge political win if, over the next four years of Nenshi's campaign, he gets two things done - an arena deal, and a cleanup of the West Village creosote matter. Then, the incoming new mayor in 2021 would be able to plan ahead for that area.
It's interesting to think that Victoria Park, for the most part, is cleaned up of all the sketch and crud. THe project to run 17th ave through to Cowboys Casino will create a loop of entertainment and culture, and a developed arena lands area would help create that vibe.
I do feel sorry for anyone that is going to / has purchased in the Orchard development though, that sounds like it's going to be a noise factory 24/7.
Ha, like the Orchard development will even have broken ground by the time the arena/green line are under construction. I base this on the insane amount of time that Lamb's 6th & 10th has taken.

Definitely one of the benefits, which the Mayor highlights, of the Victoria Park site is it's much more shovel ready than West Village.
It's funny, there's a financial deal on the table right now to the City for the arena in Victoria Park.
Nenshi has to say yes or no.
He won't say either for some strange reason.
Putting it on hold is the mayor's doing, not CSEC.

If it's the Edmonton Deal - he's saying a pretty clear no.
How long has that offer been there? But really, hes coming up to a major election, why would he jeopardize anything now?
Honestly, at this point I think its pretty clear that we shouldnt have been expecting anything until after the election.
Also agreed. No decisions should be made by the Mayor or Councillors of that magnitude at this point in time. If the CESC are expecting an answer before the election, they're out of their minds. And I'm sure they know this.
Can't really blame Nenshi or Council here. Any decision that comes from the election is going to impact that deal.

It is literally impossible for any deal to require a "yes or no" from the Mayor. Any deal would have to go through council.

For some strange reason...
Maybe because there's an election coming up? Or would you want the the municipal election to act as an effective referendum on the City's support for the arena?
And lets be perfectly clear about the situation. The Flames arena announcement was delayed for essentially a decade, because of CSEC. Now, all of a sudden we're getting on our high horse because Nenshi has taken "several months" to get back to the Flames.

It also seems clear the Mayor wants to create a funding program for something much larger - BMO expansion, Arts Commons, Olympic Plaza, Victoria Park rejuvenation work.
I would guess an expanded CRL zone. So an arena funding deal, in isolation, is not what's planned.
