This is exactly what I think. I am just annoyed at the bizarre insistence from several posters to assert that Horvat is better player than Sean Monahan.

Of course is take him for free, then I'd flip him for picks because I don't think he's better (or better value) than the players Calgary has on the first and second lines and you can't pay 3rd and 4th line players $5.5 million.
|
Well no getting him for free is of course not a realistic scenario. My point is that I would take him and his contract on the Flames. I guess your point is that Flames couldn't use him but other teams could. Then his contract must be OK I suppose.

I might have missed some posts but I saw one poster state Monahan (and Draisaitl) "were not better" than Horvat. I really don't think there's much controversy.
Monahan is certainly better than Horvat today but they are both young and should improve, so who knows. Draisaitl had the best year of all of them last year but same thing, it's still a very small sample size.

He's a solid player no doubt and if he was the Flames third line center that's one hell of a team. Looks to be a really good deal and as mentioned earlier it could look great in a few years. I still take Monahan 10 times out of 10 though.

Replace Monahan on the first line? Nope.
Replace Backlund on the second line? Nope.
Replace Bennett/Jankowski on the third line? Maybe, but not for $3.5 million more.
Replace Stajan on the first line? Sure, but not for $2 million more.
|
Horvat > Backlund. If not now then probably as early as this season. Remember he's only 22.

Backlund is a superior defensive player to Horvat and their offence is about even. I would agree Horvat is better than Backlund was at 22 however.

Not sure, some times it's hard to read through the comments and realize it's actually only one, or a few, taking a particular stance.
When I read your comment I thought it understated Love's position, so much so that I didn't recognize it as referring to Love.

How are Flames fans possibly still underrating Backlund this much?

What's absurd about it? The Flames don't have the cap room to add another $5.5 million player, and that's a fact. If they did have the cap room, centre is not the position of greatest need, and that, if not exactly a fact, is a pretty well-supported and widely held opinion.

Yeah, would I take Horvat for no assets and a lower cap hit? Yes, would I take him at this deal? Not a chance. It would be the end on at least one of our young players or Backlund.
Not worth it.

LOL. You'd take him in an instant and deal someone if you had to. Only a moron would turn down a player of his calibre for free. Basically you're saying you wouldn't want a top 10 pick. That's stupid.
