Good interview, as always lots of reading between the lines required with Brad. He sure sounded more confident about Jankowski and tkachuk than he did about Bennet. He did mention the same things as we've been mentioning with line combos. Sounded like only the top line is currently cemented with Ferland.

That is not how I interpreted his comments.

Fair enough, I'm personally really excited for Bennett and it's pretty tough to gauge trelivings responses lol

That’s a proper interview that only a guy like McKenzie can pull off as far as time goes.
I agree that goal scoring is the biggest concern. I’m not totally convinced Ferland is going to co continue to be the right guy on the top line. And if not him up there, then who?
And yeah, injuries, as BT said, they were more or less healthy last year.
Though the three questions is a row pretty much laid out the plan... he asked BT about Jagr and got the non committal/don’t discuss rumours response on signing him, that was right after the “You have $5m in cap space” question, how will you spend it, to which the follow up question was about what keep him up at night, and that was scoring...seems like a pretty logical step that if Treliving wishes he could add scoring like he said, that there is a skilled scorer that was just mentioned.

One thing I learned is that there are too many guys named Mike and Matt on the team. I lost track of who he was talking about a couple of times.

I think Ferland has the tools to play up there. As Treliving notes he thinks the game very well and has a great shot. He's sneaky skilled. But he also provides that net front presence and can dominate along the boards. Those are both things that the winger opposite Gaudreau really needs to compliment that line.
If not him then who? Gotta be Matty Tkachuk. Tkachuk has top notch skill and hockey sense. And he dominates the boards and in front of the net. He's shown an ability to play with very high skill players (Marner/Dvorak in particular). I can imagine Gaudreau-Monahan-Tkachuk being amongst the top lines in the league. I definitely dreamt about that line prior to last years draft as I thought Tkachuk's style and skill level would be a perfect fit with those two. Both Gaudreau and Tkachuk are masters of tight little passes around the net. I can imagine them meshing. All three players can pass and finish, it would truly be a triple threat line.
But yeah, Ferland is a fine fit IMO. And that frees up Tkachuk to spark and ignite another line. Gaudreau and Tkachuk are arguably our best two playmakers so its fine to have them on different lines.

My take-away is that it won't happen. And it's not just Treliving playing coy.

Yes, and the answer to Macs question was "diplomatically, no"
Then right after Bob asks what the team would add with the 5m in cap space his answer was scoring. So it's some Trelving double secret agent speak.
Treliving did say though they're going to see what they have in camp. Said everyone is always pumped on so.e kids who push for spots but then they all flatline. If I were a betting man, they're not filling holes in FA until they absolutely know they can make the team better after camp.

I don't know if Treliving really believes goal scoring is the biggest concern. There are a lot of things a he can't say.
Goaltending is obviously one of the big questions marks with this team. But he can't say that or he is publicly questioning two new players before they have even played a game.
Coaching is still a question mark too, frankly, until GG has accomplished something at the NHL level.
Goal scoring is kind of a safe answer. And there are some questions there too. The Flames did not look that dangerous against the Ducks 5 on 5.

Quite impressed with the questions McKenzie has asked. Seems to know the questions that need to be asked.
Treliving in response has been quite candid in his answers.

He talked about some of his best players like Gaudreau and Bennett having an off season. An improvement in that area can help with scoring.
Biggest wish is health and more scoring.

Use Stajan as the QB on the powerplay and you have the 5M line:
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Stajan - Stone
Smith

One thing I learned from this is how much I miss having TSN do hockey.

IIRC they do the Jets and Sens with some Canadiens and Leaf games. On Centre Ice when we play these teams TSN is the broadcast I get.
