And morons who ignore authorities and decide they are so badass that nothing can hurt them, especially a class 4 or 5 hurricane.

Darwin was right.

In fairness the kid that died was surfing waves in Barbados which was about 500km south of Irma's path. He hit his head on the reef which can happen any time surfing in really shallow waters. Kid just wanted to get barreled

The real morons are the people who didn't evacuate the keys. Some might get lucky but its surprising to see how many people haven't left. I can't believe some people think hunkering down is an option with 15+ft storm surges forecasted.

They were told days ago that they were about to be evacuated by the military. Stacy wrote this on September 7th: "They are having us walk 2 miles to airport. Then waiting, boarding groups when planes arrive. They haven't given us green light yet. Hurricane Jose is an issue possibly. This is horrible. I have nothing left but my electronics And my medication. Our hotel was destroyed and lots of fatalies...Internet is gone. Inconsistent cell signals. I can get texts randomly..."

The planes never arrived.

Then this from Mitch: "Military now not an option. Supposedly charter planes have been contracted thru Dutch government. Now it's about the weather. Jose will hit tonight. Depends on how bad but we are officially in first fly group and might be heading for Chicago tomorrow late afternoon."

The charter planes never arrived.

...

[UPDATE: 9/9/2017 12:00pm PT Just received a dire message from our friend, Mitch, who has been stranded on St. Martin with his wife and daughter: "Just connected school management with my [redacted] security guys. Can't get anything done. We now have security issues. French side of island is in civil war with gangs overpowering military and local police. Dutch soldiers at borders but at our gates have been threatened. We have Blackwater type team ready to heli in from Virgin Islands but Dutch and locals won't let them land. Same for charters. We are alone."]

In all fairness they are just exercising their 2nd amendment rights.

Some of the arguments to defend stupid people is just crazy.

Looks like Cuba has knocked it down significantly. Currently mid Cat 3 and projected to rebuild into 4 into Florida. Better than starting at 4+ I guess

Friend's daughter is in Savannah ; chilly and rainy. She sent photos of people wrapped in blankets at a restaurant. Pretty odd thing to see.

Tampa and St. Pete are going to get drilled. They'll have a lot of cleanup to do.

We've lost contact with my in-laws who are in central Florida. Pretty concerned as things were getting ugly this morning.

Likely due to a loss of power. The power is out over most of the state, but there doesn't seem to be any reports of danger to human life around the state yet. Cell phone coverage is also extremely spotty at the moment. Damage to buildings in some cases, lots of damage to trees, and some localized flooding. Nothing that wasn't expected though.

A tornado his close to our family cottage a couple years ago (across the water on a point) and this happened there. The water only went out like 10-15 feet but it was cool to see

Just seems so contrived; these aren’t local reporters caught in a situation they weren’t expecting, like Rob Brown and the Vancouver riots or even Arthur Kent way back when in Baghdad. Popping on CNN it’s almost as if they(hosts and those on the ground) are disappointed it’s only a Cat 3 storm, and trying to sensationalize everything, grossly, when there’s much more troubling things to deal with in the days and months ahead for residents, long after the TV cameras are turned off of one of those puppets, and CNN is following the next bouncing ball with blanket coverage.

The "reporter getting blown around by the wind" is so stupid. You're not actually providing any useful information. We would all learn the same thing by just putting a scarecrow out there.

#fakenews

not really but they certainly exaggerate the situation, doesn't help credibility. Not surprising its so hard to get people to evacuate, which most of the time is way more dangerous than the storm itself

I watched some of the coverage on Saturday morning when Cuomo was leading the broadcast and he was so terrible. He might be a good political commentator but I couldn't stand watching him. He just repeteated the same thing over and over every 5 minutes.
