So with the Pats loss, either the Bills or Jets are guaranteed to be in first place, even for just one week, which I imagine still would pay out pretty well in Vegas if you made that bet.

I have Miami as a playoff dark horse. Might take a game from the Pats. But I still see the Pats winning the division.

If you're an advanced stats guy, the Bills are also a dark horse in that division.

It's weird to me. I read all over the place how bad they are going to be, that they are tanking etc etc.

I don't understand that. They weren't horrible last year and they get the Jets twice and what i think is a very very fragile Dolphins club along with some other "lesser" teams.

Im not saying they will be great or even a playoff team, but I just don't see the reason for a precipitous fall off like I keep hearing about.

It is the Bills though, so I could be dead wrong and they win 2 games all year.

It's probably a small thing but the Pats should have kicked a FG to go up 10-0. Too early to go for it on 4th down and if fails it gives KC energy and it's disrespecting* to the opponent.
*disrespecting is too strong a word but i can't think of another.

I can't remember if this is correct or not but when I was looking earlier, I believe by the Pythagorean expected wins measure, they should have been a 9-7 last year. Now that's not the be all end all of stats but it's one of the main ones I use when betting on teams total wins at the start of the year and it's been pretty accurate most of the time.

Fun fact: Pats won the Superbowl the last 3 times they lost their season opener. 2001, 2003 and 2014.
I remember the 2003 shellacking at the hands of the Drew Bledsoe led Bills very well.

For sure when the Pats failed on that 4th down...the game changed completely.

The Chiefs certainly got a jolt from it and that got them going as they hadn't been engaged even a little bit prior to that.

The motivation factor jumped a bunch at that moment.

The problem wasn't the Patriots going for it those times, it was the terrible play calls. Every team should go for it on fourth and one inside the other teams half. And New England are usually the masters, just spread em five wide and QB sneak. Instead they ran power I for whatever reason.

No they're not lol. Either the Bills or Jets will be which is pretty hilarious. Watch the Bills take control in week one and never give it up.

Whether he actually supplants Smith this year, who knows, but this is likely the end for Alex in KC.
Of course the biggest thing Mahomes has going for him is the Bills and Browns passed on him. Avoiding that kiss of death is always key.
 |
After last night I would say his job is safe for now, as it should be. Don't rush Mahomes in as a starter and if Smith keeps playing like he did last night the Chiefs can take the time to do that.

Not sure I agree. 4th and 1 and in the opponents end of the field you odds are pretty decent you make it and even if you don't it leaves the Chiefs with a long field. Plus you (coach) are sending a message to your offence that you have confidence in them which will pay off in the long run.

I think they also won the Superbowl last time they were blown out by the Chiefs in 2014.

But, last night felt different to me - I can't remember Bill's defence giving up so many long plays. Usually he forces you to make long drives.
