The big difference between the two is the position they play. Jankowski very well could have played in the NHL last season (not saying he should have). Due to centre depth, there was virtually no chance for him last season. He had a very impressive rookie season in the AHL, and he is very likely forcing his way onto the team this up coming year.

Unlike at C, we are thin on RW with the big club and it is very possible that he could impress in camp and force his way into the line up to start the year.

Signing an old, long haired living legend will more than likely ruin his chances of atleast starting the season for the Flames though

I think that Foo will have to really impress to make the team. It still comes down to waiver eligibility, and also the need for depth.

For instance, if Poirier comes in and has an amazing camp/pre-season (or Shinkaruk for that matter), then it becomes a risk in trying to send him down to Stockton. Foo (IMO) would have to really be a whole level above Poirier in that case, and signing Jagr then becomes a bit of a risk as well.

As for Kylington, I do think that he does have the ability to surprise at camp and make the team, but he has to really out-perform Kulak/Wotherspoon.

If I am a GM, I would rather send the guy down that doesn't have to clear waivers, even if he is a bit better than the guy I keep, because I know that during the season injuries happen and you will need that depth. Why risk losing a player for nothing? A waiver-exempt player for me will always have to really do a whole lot more for me to keep him on the team over a guy that needs waivers. Foo and Kylington both have the ability to make the team, but I do believe that they have to be substantially better. Depth - especially for a team that is supposed to be competing - is so crucial. Jankowski is a different animal as he already put in a full 4 years of college, won a championship there, and had a full season of pro in the AHL where he did very well.

In my mind, the only potential negative of signing Jagr (as long as that contract is a 1 year with a reasonable cap hit) is if Poirier really does shine this camp. He has that potential. Now that he is living clean again, I wouldn't think it would be a crazy notion to think that he might just have a fantastic enough camp that other teams take notice and place him on their respective 'claim' lists.

I still think Jagr is a solid signing given the above. He will generate some revenue with jersey sales (owners are happy), he will add to the culture of the team (he has been shown to be a fantastic mentor), and he has a lot of game left in him which then makes this a more dangerous team with the added depth and versatility.

Treliving says he strongly suspects there will be one or two PTO's signed before camp kicks off.

IMO there was a strong implication at the end of the BT interview that work was underway to bring some more players in for camp. My guess is that BT has his eyes on one or two UFA players who may sign, but if they don't he's not going to sign any UFAs and will only bring in PTOs.

A massive long shot but..

Iginla and Jagr come to camp on PTO's. May the best legend win a spot.

Nobody is offering future hall of famers PTOs. That would be insulting.

I don't see either guy on PTO's to be quite honest. Jagr will be signed before opening night to some team. Iginla may skate on his own for a month or two and be offered a contract once a team loses a winger to injury (or he just retires). I would assume that since he hasn't called it quits yet (like his buddy Doan), there must be at least a team or two who made a serious offer to Jarome.

It has been exceptionally quiet on this rumor front since the Bennett signing... too quiet. Insiders! We need more Jagr details and information!

Maybe he read Scorp's post that predicted the signing for tomorrow.

Oh, today is the 7th.

Maybe Friday then. Hopefully they got some discussions hammered out throughout today.

Might want to hold off on those Jagr jerseys for a bit yet. A good friend of mine was at a luncheon with Burke today and says the message they were given was that management "really like the room as it currently is". Apparently they stressed team chemistry and really downplayed the Jagr rumours. My buddy got a pretty clear impression that they were saying Jagr isn't happening without actually saying the words "Jagr isn't happening.".

Granted it was Burke talking and not Tre, and I guess it doesn't "for sure" mean it's impossible, but according to him they made it sound really unlikely.

I guess we can still hope?

I think more than anyone Murray Edwards should be able to appreciate the "trickle down" economic benefits of a Jagr signing. (Jerseys, ticket sales, higher viewership numbers)

Exactly this. Popular opinion is that people hate the new jerseys unveiled by Adidas anyway. How are you going to sell them while they look largely similar to the old Reebok's? With FRIGGIN JAGR S NAMEBAR ON THE BACK, THAT'S HOW!

For the short time I listened to the FAN this morning the host on the Pinder hour was fairly emphatic that Jagr wasn't happening. Treliving has been on the station the past couple days and perhaps that is the message the organization wants to send?

Maybe they want to downplay it and as soon as our hopes are down they sign him.

Maybe they are in the mix for Duchene?
