You see, the dilemma I have is that I want to support local, but I want to give as little actual money to the local beef producers as possible, so I demand that A&W source more beef from Alberta!
Want to support local beef producers? Go to Co-op, buy a steak, and stfu.

Wall's been taking aim at A&W for buying American instead of Canadian for years now, actually. What's interesting here is that someone in their marketing/PR group decided to go back to a tweet from two weeks ago and respond with the same inflammatory rhetoric that Earls got eaten alive for. It's a rather interesting error as they have previously made quite certain to avoid mentioning that little of what A&W Canada offers is Canadian produced throughout the four years now that they have run this insipid marketing campaign.

Yes, a tweet wasn't the ideal response. You'd think they'd get their Comms department to write a release and then link to that in a tweet. I wonder if the social media person even know who Brad Wall was?

I bet most Canadian ranchers meet the actual standards these companies require but just dont have the "Officially recognized Brand" of documentation saying these steps are taken that big companies require to brand their products as humane, healthy, not-poison.

Oh, they know. They've usually just ignored his tweets though.

It is purely based on hormones and steroids. Perhaps I'm just uneducated on this but my understanding is that not all hormones and steroids are evil and cause mutant children or cancer or whatever. Much of it is to make the beef more bacteria resistant and such.
If A&W could convince me that the US hormone and steroid free meat that they use is tangibly better than the Canadian stuff, sure go ahead and choose the best product available. At present, I have no reason or information to believe that is the case.

From just doing some browsing online, A&W buys a lot of their meat from Australia
mmmm Kangeroo and Racoon Anus.

Yup.
A&W can suck it. Their marketing campaign is insufferable. WTF happened to Ryan the trainee? Fire the funny guy and make the old straight man your face of the company and give him a street team. Smart.

I have no idea what A&W puts in their food, but man, do I ever feel sick after eating it.

Honestly their burgers are so salty (as are their onion rings) that they they could make one from Kobe Beef and the other from dog meat and you would be hard pressed to taste the difference.

I suppose it all depends on how much you care about supporting Alberta business. Outrage for the sake if it is going bananas over every little Trump tweet to which there's an ongoing thread to get your fill. There's some merit for Western Canadians being outraged over these comments.

I have no issue with what A&W said. It's exactly what Earls should have said. Simply saying "we think this stuff is better quality" is something I'll support 100% (if it is actually better, at least) so at least A&W is going about it the right way and not hiding behind some marketing bs

Yeah but that's a slap in the face to local ranchers and pretty baseless.

Do we know it's baseless?
A&W is touting their hormone and antibiotic free beef. If they can't get enough of that in Canada, then it seems like a pretty fair comment to make.

My concern/issue with American beef is the process of irradiation that is used. I'm not sure how much of their beef supply is actually irradiated but I would prefer to stay away from it. I believe this year Health Canada/Food Inspection has allowed the process on Canadian beef but I haven't seen any of that stuff available in Calgary yet.

I guess I just don't see it that way. Maybe it's because I spent so much time in the restaurant industry, but to me, it's pretty black and white. If Product A is better quality than product B, then that's the one you get.
It's why I supported the Earls move too, even though their marketing angle and PR spin was complete BS. I found the meat to be a better quality, so end of story.
Don't get me wrong, I sort of understand the outrage. I just personally don't care where it comes from

Anyone that's worked even a little in business knows that the tweet was not very tactful at all.

To say their beef is better than anyone else's is kind of baseless in the first place so I don't see where you can derive their product is better. You are basically taking their sales pitch hook, line, and sinker as it could be worse quality beef at the end of the day.

Still, even them simply claiming it's better doesn't bother me.
If they said they were changing to beef from Mexico, claiming it was a better quality, and then it was horrible, THEN I'd have an issue.
Hate to say it, but Alberta Beef is purely a marketing tool. It really isn't really anything special. It's like a Toyota, it's dependable, you know it'll be good, nothing will go wrong and it will do its job well. But it's nowhere near the best you can get

I don't buy for a second that they cannot source from Canadian producers.
