4.5 is probably a slightly low estimate, as I see Bennett's camp pushing for a 2 year deal closer to 2 per season.
The 7.165 Cap space is for 19 contracts, Bennett makes it 20, so at least 2 more players at minimum wage. In that case it becomes 3M +0.65M*2=4.3M.

You end up with $2.865M or less left to spend on a free agent(which would make it a 23 man roster).
Jankowski and Foo have an NHL base salary of $0.925M, so could be more. Then again Bennett might sign for $2.5M as well.

I stand corrected!

One change I'd make though is if you bring in that 23rd player you may send down a depth forward so it would be

7.165
-3
-.7

leaving roughly 3.5

You have to leave so room so that at a minimum, you are not forced to keep your minimum salary players during the season. You would want some room in case a $900K player beats out a $650K player in camp.

I guess you don't have to, but would seem odd to go into camp with the roster 100% dictated by salary cap limitations. Even forgetting about room for in season acquisitions.

So with $3.5 in room, it's maybe more like $2.8. Which is certainly enough to add a free agent before start of season. It's also a tremendous amount fo room at the deadline, where you only take on a portion of the AAV.

You have to remember the Flames will probably not want to go over the cap with potential ELC bonuses. Tkachuk, Jankowski, and Foo have a combined $2.3 million in potential performance bonuses. Very unlikely they obtain all $2.3 million of the bonuses but the Flames should give room for $1 million in bonuses.

Given Jagr's(or Iginla, sure) age, and how he would theoretically only get offers for a 1-year, his contract would be very bonus heavy as well, and the bonus-allocated cap space is treated differently from regular cap space. Very good article from Freeway covered this.

FN: Here's how the Flames can sign Jaromir Jagr and stay under the cap

Let’s just say the Flames are comfortable paying Jagr around $3.75 million next season. Conceivably the Flames could give Jagr a $1 million base salary and $2.75 million in escalating performance bonuses tied to markers like games played, goals, points or the team’s playoff performance. Teams can go over the salary cap by up to 7.5 per cent of the cap – $5.625 million this season – as long as that overage is all performance bonuses.

I believe Fire's point is that performance bonuses still need to be managed.

Yes you are allowed to go over the cap by 7.5% with a bonus cushion, but the problem is that if you are still over the cap by the end of the season because of performance bonuses paid out, that overage will roll over to next season.

Imagine if hypothetically Tkachuk, Foo, and Jankowski hit all their performance bonuses (~$2.2 million). That will roll over to next season's cap. Now add in a Jagr or Iginla's potential bonuses. Flames could end up in close to $4 million or more in dead cap space.

While that is pretty unlikely to happen, but some of that is attainable and you have to do some risk analysis before you go too overboard on giving out performance bonuses.

I agree with your point, but is this number reasonable? (I have no idea personally, and am just asking the question.)

To me, that sounds high and I doubt these guys earn that much bonus. But if anyone can shed more light on this, I would be interested to know.

Yeah, I didn't take a close look at what all the bonus clauses are in the contracts, so decent chance $1 million is on the high side. There might be some unlikely clauses like having to be in the top 10 in the NHL for points or something.

A reasonable chance Tkachuk hits all his schedule A performance bonuses, seeing as his contract is likely maxed out Schedule A.

If he reaches 4 out of the 9 milestones he will likely earn $850k in bonuses:
1) among top 6 for TOI among forwards
2) 20 or more goals
3) 35 or more assists
4) 60 or more points
5) .73 or more points per game over a minimum of 42 regular season games
6) among top 3 forwards in +/-
7) end of season all-rookie team
8) selected to play or plays NHL all-star game
9) NHL All-star game MVP

Tkachuk reached conditions 3 + 6 in 2016/17.
Was .63 pts/game, so close to condition 5
Was 20 seconds per game behind the 6th forward for condition 1.

So it is realistic for Tkachuk on his own to get $850k in performance bonuses if he has a slightly better season than last year.

Yeah, that's if he stays on Backlund's line. If they move him to Bennetts line, it would make that a good line too and maybe save the Flames some money.

Jarome wont get more than a one-day contract that will allow him to retire a Flame. He is going to retire. The one-day contract is all thats available.

Book it!

I would consider it a great problem to have if Tkachuk, Foo and Jankowski all get max bonuses.

Why doesn't he just announce retirement then? What is the hold up?

Tre better do something because according to this article the Flames had an absolutely awful summer. We will never contend with the Oilers and we know it.

Embarrassingly bad take by this goof. Read at your own caution.

Summary:

Flames suck because we brought in Eddie Lack and Tanner Glass on a PTO. Completely fails to mention Hamonic or Smith.

It's like they found the dumbest person from the comment section on a Staples article and then gave him the freedom to write his own article.

Is that a good way to save money though? Put Tkachuk in the best position possible and hope he gets all those bonuses. The Flames could make all that money back tenfold by playing extra home games in May.
