Surprised he took a two-way. It's basically the same deal Bartkowski has (depending on the AHL portion).
I have to think Wotherspoon's will be pretty much the same deal, if not cheaper.

A great signing for the Flames but with his waiver status they may have to be careful coming out of training camp. I sort of expect him to be cut early now to dodge a claim. Odd because I also see him pencilled in the the top 6 roster spots... time will tell. Can't wait for camp!

Hope Kulak storms in and solidifies himself in the #6 role this year.

This contract likely drives Bartkowski to the minors. Smart move and a good boost for the Flames #6-7 position. Wotherspoon should sign for the same, and then you'll see a good camp battle. Will solidify the bubble players for sure, and make it a battle over who performs the best.

I think even if Kulak claims the #6 spot you see Bartkowski as the #7. That is unless one of the younger guys badly outplays him in camp. He has enough experience to step in at a moments notice, and it doesn't hurt any kid's development by having them in the press box. I still think he's the #7 barring a miracle performance from someone.

I would think the #6 battle is between Kulak and Wotherspoon (maybe Healey?), with Bartowski as #7. Hopefully one of them can mesh with Stone, to provide competent 5/6 minutes.

With that cap hit that 6D spot is Kulak's to lose.

I would think Bartkowski has the inside track, but he performed pretty poorly down the stretch last season. I think if the dollars are the same the Flames could easily go with Kulak and Wotherspoon as the 6 and7, then platoon them with Stone. Good for development and doesn't really hurt the team with having too many young guys in the lineup. If there is an injury, Bartkowski is the first call up. It will be an interesting battle to watch in camp.

But giving up a lower NHL salary in exchange for more AHL money is not the same as the player "pushing hard for the minimum".
I still maintain a player should not be actively lobbying for less money in hopes of giving him a better chance at an NHL job. If the team is tying the coaches hands so much such that a $175K difference in salary is a factor in not putting the best possible players on the ice, then I'd be concerned.

Great! Hopefully he can win a spot in camp and play solid alongside Stone on the 3rd pair.

$575,000 is the league minimum.
$650,000 is $30,000 less than he was earning last year, and this contract won't have bonuses associated with it (last year he had another $120,000 in bonuses as well.)
There is likely a higher AHL salary as a protection, and as was illustrated earlier, he's still likely to make more paper money this year than last year, regardless of his actual cap number.

I'm not convinced he makes the team out of camp. I'd love the scenario that sees the Flames graduate a defensive and offensive prospect and still challenge for the division, but I'm not sure that we are going to see immediate dividends by graduating Kulak.
However, coaches like him, he's risen to the top of the list in the AHL, and there is a spot open today for 6th D if he can outplay Matt Bartkowski at camp.
I'm rooting for another top-4 D to emerge from the farm. It's been 6 years since the last one graduated.

He's the most likely defensive prospect to graduate given his NHL experience thus far. Not sure why you're talking about a top 4 defenceman when all he'd be asked is to be the #6 guy. Not sure what your comment about immediate returns by graduating him means. Again if he's a passable #6 guy then great, we've got a cheap one with some upside.
He's waiver eligible. He's got NHL upside. If he looks like he can play then he makes the team because keeping him and playing him on a cheap contract pays more returns than losing him on waivers for nothing after putting a bunch of development into him. He stands a very good chance of making the team because of this. Why do you think he wouldn't make the team and do you think we might not just lose him on waivers if that happens? Then we'd be getting no returns on drafting and developing him. I'll take him as the cheap, homegrown #6 over no returns.

Good for Kulak. That's one down with two to go, swiftly I hope.
I don't think there are any guarantees with Kulak, Wotherspoon or Bartkowski. We could easily grab someone off the waiver wire or make another deal for a Left D.
