"We need to leave spots for kids"
And what if, like last training camp, they disappoint and no one steps up enough to take that 3RW spot? We go in with gaping holes on the wings with no one to fill them adequately.
I'd rather have the second most proven point producer in NHL history who is coming off 46 on my third line. The kids are welcome to nab Lazar or Stajan's spot if they're up for it. Or even Jagr's, if he has somehow fallen off. I'll take the minimal risk of a 1 year though for the opportunity at what he can bring.

I don't. I want him to score his first goal of the season in Edmonton.

Not to mention injuries are going to happen. We were surprisingly a healthy team last year.

There's certainly an argument to be made that this team won't win the Stanley cup, with or without Jagr, so giving the ice time to young players the organization needs to develop bodes well for the growth of the team. I'm not in favor of handing spots to young players, but if you block a young player from potentially grabbing a vital role isn't that counter productive?
Im a big Jagr fan but I'm not sure the Flames are a Jagr short of being a cup threat at this point, which would be the only way it'd make sense adding him IMO.

Spencer Foo, Emile Poirier, Morgan Klimchuk, Daniel Pribyl, Curtis Lazar, none are players who can possibly be harmed by spending more time in the AHL while we have Jaromir Jagr on our powerplay.
Besides, if the rumors of Jagr slowing down come playoff time are true, it'll be good to have some kids chomping at the bit to get in the game. And don't think Tkachuk/Janko/Bennett wouldn't THRIVE getting to follow Jagr around like golden retriever puppies for a year.

The team has to go into the season thinks ng they'll win the cup or there's no use playing. "Giving" the spot to a kid will guarantee the team won't go far, making everyone play better than the guy in front of them makes players better. Just giving a young player a spot sends a message that you don't have to earn your spot...that's not good. Get the best possible players and make everyone compete for them. If no kids can play better than Jagr they don't deserve to play

While it would be "cool" to have Jagr, I'm not convinced he'd actually help the Flames as much as slow down development of others. Kind of the same argument as Iggy.
OTOH, if he scored a bunch in the regular season and helped get the Flames to a higher seed, I'd be OK with it. Just don't think that's gonna happen though.
These days it seems to be all about legs. Which means more youth. There's a reason that JJ and JI haven't been picked up by clubs yet.

Said it before, but if a kid can't take a roster spot from a 45-year-old, then that kid needs more time to develop.

But if jagr comes in, it will be as someone who has a spot. Meaning that it is not really possible to take his spot unless he's terrible and even then it would be well into the season before they would opt out of the jagr trial.
All those arguing that kids need to earn their spot and it is bad to have spots held for kids must concede that it is also bad to hand over spots to the jagrs of the world.
There is some risk to this acquisition and it is the type of move that many on this site have railed against for years. But the 'coolness' factor trumps for most, myself included. Just don't think it's right to classify the training camp battle between jankowski and jagr as a fair fight.

I don't think you can say it's as black and white as a prospect taking the spot from an established NHLer.
Once you've signed them, they're going to play regardless of how bad they are (see Wideman and Brouwer) because of contract, waiver and veteran status. You can maybe bury them on the 4th but there's only so many overpaid veterans who can be hidden there.
