The military is from the entire country, yes, but I think it's safe to say most people in military service will lean conservative/republican. That's not to say they will all put up with crazy bulls***, but I'd be willing to bet the percentage of REAL trump supporters is higher in the military than it is in the general population. We see it with the police force, and as you mentioned, the national guard could see some resistance to federal orders.

If you start to get any situation where soldiers know their officers are disobeying the president's orders, or soldiers refusing to carry out orders, and it could end up snowballing into a whole bag of crap that we probably don't want to think about. But I do think it's a little naive to think it can't happen. Maybe not all out military force against itself (right away anyways) but states seceding (or at least trying), governors refusing to comply with feds (we've already seen it with the sanctuary cities), sure.

We're in largely unprecedented territory here. I don't think we can really rule out many possibilities.
I would probably rule out your scenario.

I think that you would be surprised about the political leanings in the military. Most officers see themselves as apolitical, they serve the Commander in Chief, but don't concern themselves with the politics of it, it makes the job way to complicated.

The Chain of command works because it in a sense because at any point a illegal order or one that contravenes the constitution of the United States or the lawful commander in chief can be stopped.

So even if General Boomstick throws his lot in with a lets say Trump Insurrection, I very much doubt that those orders would peculate through the ranks. At some point you will get a this is a illegal order and I ain't following it.

I could especially see that if General Boomstick ordered his men to fire on other US troops unlawfully.

General Boomstick might say "Bah god men, we're taking the White House and returning Trump to Power, so we're going to have to kill the soldiers defending it" He might suddenly have three colonels arresting him for issuing an illegal order, or just shooting old General Boomstick between the eyes.

Also remember that there is also the pressure of the invalidation of the defense "I was following orders". If you throw in on an illegal order that defense won't stop you from seeing the business end of a firing squad.

I won't say it can't happen, the world is going kind of funny. I am saying that the statistics say that its not likely to happen.

And when you remember he's getting more insane, this should be zero by next year. At the very least while he's robbing taxpayers to make money for himself, he's taking a hit too.

If anything is likely to make him resign, it's if his bad Presidenting starts to cost his businesses money.

You might get a civil war in terms of violence in the streets in major cities with militia type morons on both sides engaging in small arms battles.

That'll last as long as it takes for a re-enforced armored division with helicopter gun ships to roll in to put an end to it.

And we're basically too lazy.

Yeah this I definitely agree with.

It's hard to come up with a situation where the losing side in a civil war has been allowed to whitewash and re-interpret everything that happened, to a point where Lost Cause "history" is probably as well or even better known at this point than the actual history.

(I think the country is absolutely on the right track with finally starting to replace Confederate history with what I would call actual history, and statues are a good place to start.)

If the Secretary of defense says he's freaking nuts, and refuses, the President has the right to fire him and appoint a new secretary of defense that has to be from my understanding a cabinet member who was approved by Congress.

Congress earlier this year discussed a bill that would change the launch scenarios so that a pre-emptive strike would have to be approved by Congress even in the face of the War Powers act. So basically the President would have to get approval for a legal declaration of war. I don't know where that bill is now, but it seems almost like it was designed with Trump in mind.

Right now, the Joint Chiefs don't have a say in the launching of nuclear weapons. Basically if the order is approved by the President and Secretary of Defense and the order goes to the General in charge of Strategic Rocket Forces. In theory he could stop a launch by not activating the communications procedures that lead up to a launch from my understanding, but I doubt that would happen.

As it stands the only way to prevent the launch of a missile by the president would be if his entire cabinet refused the order.
One of the secret service guys could go kingslayer on him.

Naked statues of Donald pop up in multiple US cities...

The NYC Parks Department provided a statement to Gothamist, saying "NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks, no matter how small."

Yeah, I think that you and I read the same paper, but I doubt that it would happen or need to happen.

If no one at a cabinet level "Votes" or reads the confirming code the missiles can't launch.

Its designed to prevent a President who is not in charge of his mental facilities to launch a pre-emptive strike.

In the likelyhood that America is attacked first there's no question that the Sec Def would confirm the order.

In the likely hood that US intelligence receives information that Russia or China or North Korea had put their rocket forces on high alert and were fueling their missiles and prepping to launch (Russia and China and North Korean military and strategic communications are being monitored) then a counter force strike would probably be authorized. and confirmed.

I have trouble seeing James Mattis confirming a pre-emptive nuclear strike, out of a lot of Trump Appointees, Trump got in my mind the Sec Def right, even if he didn't understand who he was appointing.

While Trump talked about tearing up the Iran Nuclear deal, Mattis thinks it wasn't a good deal, but its in place now and can't be recinded

While Trump bitched about his allies and not pulling their weight, Mattis said that was a kooky point of view.

While Trump is a Climate change denier, Mattis acknowledges climate change and freely discussed it impact on global security. He classed it as something that needs a whole broad based full government response and that the Department of Defense play a appropriate role in the governments response to it.

While it might sound like I'm saying that Mattis is some progressive, Yoga inspired former Marine General. He is a Marine General who has gotten into trouble with his quotes.

But the man is no dummy, he's certainly no Trump yes man, and I have my doubts that he would confirm a Nuclear Launch order without a rational reason to do it.

Out of all the Trump appointee's to be honest, and they're pretty bad, Mattis was a good choice.

So during a Friday in which there's a massive storm about to hit Texas Trump has so far brought back the transgender ban in the military and and has now just pardoned the racist sheriff Joe Arpaio. What a day.

B) I've done more than any administration in American History

ummmm... OK?

Gorka is interesting though... seems like Kelly was quite the political knife fighter behind closed doors... just Stephen Miller left before Breitbart Hordes are unleashed

And had an aide resign. Trump seems to have "drop controversial news on a Friday" part of politics down.

I also like another token move to claim he's not a white supremacist (Gorka out), followed with a wink-wink to white supremacists that he's on their side (pardoning Arpaio). As I've long said though, he cannot help himself because he's mentally ill and cannot do anything to stop it even if he wanted to. He belongs in care, not as President.

WH now saying Gorka was fired.

Gorka's resignation letter has been leaked, and is scathing in criticizing WH in departing from MAGA ideals.
