And, maybe most importantly, I don’t want to see Jagr’s nameplate on a Flames jersey. This would be perhaps the most painful development imaginable. Awful.

It's honest to an extent... he doesn't mention that they have a potential 7.525M in potential bonuses that they need space for. Since a lot of that is McDavid's, the bonuses will be hit. They're already screwed for cap space next year, so if they pile up bonus overages this year they'll be even more screwed. The oilers cap picture this year isn't as rosy as he makes it sound.

Default Friedman: Flames have looked at Jagr

I'm eagerly awaiting the news. I was somewhat stoked about Iggy potentially coming on board also but this makes more sense in some ways, and is more exciting in some ways also. The potential downside of bringing in a 40 year old Iggy is sky high. If he were to come in and totally underwhelm it could be a nasty distraction.

If Jagr comes in and decides to finally become an old man, the worst that's happened is everyone now has a Flames jersey with the name Jagr stamped on the back (yes I know, he may've stolen a spot from a young guy, yadda yadda. Jagr jersey!!).

Later in the season, I think the Flames would be better served without Jagr.

Don't get me wrong, for game 1, Jagr will be better than Foo, Poirier, Klimchuk, etc... That is almost a certainty. But if the Flames give a prospect a chance to grow in the NHL, they might surprise some people. Game 82, a prospect might be a more valuable player than Jagr.

His playoff production hasn't been great recently. I think the Flames need to operate under the assumption that they'll be a playoff team. If that's the case, I'd rather go into the playoffs with a battle tested prospect than a worn out Jagr.

This is what I mean though. Why are oiler writers and bloggers writing about Flames speculation/rumours more than media in Calgary? They're pretty invested in what the Flames are doing and comparing the teams for how much they talk about the oilers as being this team of destiny. Insecurity seeping through no doubt. If the Flames' ability to go out and seek scoring help chaps their asses this much now then its going to be pretty hysterical later on. Chia' s cap management is going to have them crying into their pillows nightly.

Weird criticism of Lucic. Yeah there are nuances, but fundamentally a power play goal is worth the same as one at scored at even strength.

I think he was saying he needs to pick it up more on 5v5.

Lucia was third on the Oilers in power play scoring, but sixth at even strength. It is definitely an issue for them if he is unable to be more productive outside the man advantage.

Holy crap, can we not derail the Jagr thread into another Oiler thread? We have about 4 threads going for them already.. let's stick to talking about Jagr rumors/stats/potential cap hit/etc. Looking for news here, not oilers talk. Though, I will admit, I will bathe in their salty tears when we sign him.

I seriously think the Flames inability to get Sam Bennett signed is the hold-up with getting Jagr signed.

Jesus Bennett...sign already. Guy should be happy with any contract. Pathetic 26 point season. FFS.

Don't understand what the hold up is or how stubborn his agent is. He hasn't done anything so far to have any sense of entitlement.

Unfortunately I think Brouwer fills the role we would see Jags play here. Depth winger/powerplay.

Many focus on Brouwer's negative chemistry with Bennett. However, people like to forget that the Tkachuk-Bennett-Brouwer line was actually decent at the start of the season. Brouwer might turn things around and he might not. Buy, we gotta play him somewhere.

Gaudreau-Monahan-
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
-Bennett-
Stajan-
5 openings in the lineup at wing only 3 in the top 9. Out of Ferland, Verteeg,Brouwer, Lazaar, and others, such as Foo and Jankowski could push for spots. There's very little room without moving a player.

Would have to happen after a trade or training camp IMO

There is always room for better players...Jagr is certainly better than many potential top nine players on the roster

Chicka chicka boom boom, will there be enough room.

Yes, there will be. Guys disappoint in camp, drop off, injuries happen. There is no guarantee that Stajan and Lazar start opening night in the line up. There is no guarantee that Jankowski takes a spot at the end of training camp.

If we sign Jagr and find we actually don't have enough spots for all the players who 100% deserve to be in the lineup full time, I'm going to call that a problem we really really want to have.

On the other hand, not signing Jagr and finding out we have an extra spot and nobody that has really earned it seems like a problem you really don't want to have.

Neither are very likely, but I like the risk of too much of a good thing over too little.
