Does anyone know exactly who submitted the final design? Probably just a silly story but I was told a number of years ago it was a local female artist who first sketched it on a Calgary Sun crossword puzzle in 10 minutes using the flaming A as her goofy inspiration
A friend of mine in high school always claimed it was his mom that won the contest\made the design. I don't recall him being a hockey fan at all either.
Broken and already decomposed It was a joke, quick edit of the Flyer's logo.
I guess I'm gullible then.
I thought it might be one of those fan vote contests where a poor design wins for some unfathomable reason. I was horrified it may have once been considered.
I am still curious what the two rejected designs were.
The one that was considered too detailed to be a crest - I wonder how it would compare to say the Wild logo.
FWIW - I love the flaming C and wouldn't want it any other way.

Skalbania was able to outbid the Seaman/Hotchkiss group by surreptitiously negotiating a long-term deal for local broadcast rights with Molstar Communications. He used that up-front money to sweeten his offer. Or so the story went.
This is factual. The remainder was a loan. He didn't use any of his own money.

I love the Flaming 'C,' I think its one of the most iconic emblems in North American sports, it, albeit much like the Flyers' logo, is simple and clean.

I disagree with that article as for the naming of the Flyers. They can bull #### their fans as much as they want. The name first came from the Edmonton Flyers of the old pro WHL and other leagues and the new Philadelphia GM, Bud Poile. Poile was a former player and coach of the Edmonton Flyers.

That could be - the NHL Flyers say their naming contest was introduced April 1996 and concluded July 1966. They say many entrants suggested the name Flyers or Fliers.

Yes, I always thought this was the case. I remember reading about this as a boy. The expansion era (and subsequently the WHA) brought with it a massive influx of minor pro executives. Whether Poile was instrumental in the name selection or not, the Flyers name would have been bandied about. The quasi-alliterative "Ph" and "F" probably helped as well.
I'm probably in a huge minority that doesn't quite like the logo. I keep seeing it as a hairy C. Don't get me wrong, I still think that the flaming C works well, but I wish they would make them look... flamier.
While trying to see if there was anything in the newspaper archives on the two rejected logos, I found this neat article. From the May 26, 1980 issue of the Calgary Herald:

I don't remember debate over the logo ... but I do remember debate over the team name. Keep the Flames or go with something different. I always liked the Calgary Wranglers and the Calgary Cowboys and their respective logos at the time better than the Calgary Flames.
I still love the Wranglers name .I love the Flames name but it would have been cool to continue the Wranglers history.

It would have fit the city better. Had they moved to Calgary recently I feel like they definitely would have changed the name as "brand" is so important now.
At the time I think no one cared one iota about originality.
I'm just amazed by some of the old knowledge of this team that some posters have here. You guys are in fact Flames historians, and I love it. Keep passing the knowledge on, we are lucky to have you gentlemen on here.
