Probably because less people are getting married.

It's a moot point anyways. Tattoos can be lasered off if required. Nothing is forever!

Actually it's been theorized that it has to do quite a bit with women rights.

In the 1970s, when divorce rates peaked. The obvious changes to the marriage laws played a part (no fault divorce, the fact you didn't need to prove adultery in some places) which made divorce more readily available and therefore less stigmatized. But you also had women who had spent their lives thinking they had to be a wife, and only a wife, for their breadwinner husband. Then there was a shifting time. In the 60s when you had 30% of women going to college, now saw that spike to over 50% for the first time in the late 70s. They were no longer just to be homemakers, but it was possible to be professionals, which caused strain on marriages for men who hadn't caught up to the times as the ladies found their own ambitions. Earlier than that you were even more of a pariah if you got divorced, so you had a lot of marriages "catching up" as divorce became easier and more normalized in the 70s.

But by the 1990s, men were less "caught off guard" when they found out their wife wanted a career. They knew of their ambitions and they knew they were entering into an equal partnership. Not to mention the double income provided less of a strain on the marriage due to money-issues. Now the lowest rate of divorce is among women with a college degree and an established career prior to marriage with around 20%. Which follows the logic, as the men marrying those women should have appreciated their independence.

Of course there's also society changes. Back in the day banging a random in a drive-in meant no condoms or birth control (didn't want to burn in hell for all eternity) and baby out of wedlock was a no-go, so any accidents resulted in marriage. Now we can happily bang some hotties without worrying that we'll have to get married in 3 months if the woman ends up showing.

What's been really propping up the rate today is multi-time divorces. A person who gets married fives times and is divorced 5 times counts the same when talking about divorce rates as any other 5 divorces. But the percentage of previously unwed couples who marry today and end up divorced is about 30%.

Ringers are dumb.

Even if your marriage doesn't last, you'll have a ring for your next one. That sounds financially prudent to me. Do it.

I wanted to do this, glad I didn't as we split up a few years ago.

I wore my ring a lot but had to take it off for work, like a lot of guys. Not wearing a ring at work is pretty common these days so a lot of blue collar types end up putting them in a box and never wearing them. That was part of my motivation to get the tat.

I'm naive to expect my marriage to last forever?

If I expect it to fail at some point, why even get married in the first place? I'm sure anything can happen, but I still expect to be with her when I'm dying.

They sit around and stare at it crying for eternity, because in 2017 there is no way to remove a tattoo

Where do you guys go to get a tattoo removed that's so easy? I have about 10 treatments on one from Remington Laser and it's still there. Basically have given up on having it removed.

Out of curiosity: what job(s) involve so much labour you can't wear your ring, but not enough to require gloves?

Generally speaking any job where you could catch your finger on moving equipment, this can happen with or without gloves on. When I was working in the field (oilfield services) we all took our rings off as it was too easy to snag your finger on something big/heavy as you were moving it. Gloves didn't make a difference in these cases, you could catch your ring with them on too.

Related question, anyone here take theirs off when playing sports? I generally don't (except for golf) as I am always forgetting but a few years ago I took a puck in the hand playing beer league. Didn't think much of it or the discomfort until after the game when I took the glove off and found the ring had been broken in half and ended up cutting pretty deep into my finger.

Depends on the job, but physical labour, yeah I can see it.

I've played softball with someone who didnt take their ring off and caught the ball the wrong way once and I'm not having any of that, I take it off for sports.

You edited while I posted. Yes I take it off for all sports and if it breaking and cutting you was the worst you got then you got lucky.

A guy I played softball with caught the ball right on the ring and his finger started swelling up around it, I think he had to go to the Hospital and they had to cut it off his finger with boltcutters or something ridiculous like that.

Whether thats true or not I'm not risking it, I always take my ring off for sports.

Oh....and Golf is not a sport, its a nice walk being ruined.

Same. I made sure though when I married my wife we were best friends as well as a couple. You need to live with someone before you marry them. You never know what they are really like unless you live together.

I love everyones confidence in an everlasting marriage with the love of their life, here, must be the power of the ring.

I remember my friends nurse wife dropped him for the doctor she was banging. Life is full of surprises.

As far as tacky tattoos go, this is still slightly better than getting matching tramp stamps.

Its not about matching its about being able to stand hip to hip and they complete one big tattoo.

I see your point and I understand that, but I also understand what everyone is saying, if you're going into a marriage with the thought in the back of your mind that it might fail, it more than likely will.

The faith in the totality of the marriage is part of what makes marriages work.
