It's like meetin with Dicaprio or Cameron to discuss global warming.

So this is a terrible post.
Let me explain how this is different:
k.d. is openly gay and an Albertan so a discussion about LGBTQ issues in this province would actually be relevant, as opposed to a bunch of celebrities talking about science.

It is really not that high of a bar to set to expect people to just be tolerant of something that does not in any way affect their daily lives. Hypocrisy is acting like it takes more effort to do so.
Could you explain how self preservation and selfishness relate to this? What are people trying to protect themselves from? And what are they selfish of? Gay people?

Ok, but really is her position unknown? Like I despise Kenney and totally support LGBTQ issues and I can't see the point of him meeting with her. It's a publicity stunt, plain and simple. Why should our politicians meet with celebrities to get their stance on issues?

Their stance? (Sorry)
What if he is? There are likely LGBTQ members of the UCP, and presumably he has heard from them or will. Like I say, I can't stand him, but what makes it imperative that he meet with KD Lang?

Important point here is that so far Kenney has seemed even more restrictive in his LGBTQ public opinions than Jean. Even if Jean is just saying the right things, Kenney is actively saying the wrong things.
It's not exactly shocking that people who make public comments that aren't completely inclusive of the the LGBTQ community won't be invited to their event.
If I made election issues about Hindus I wouldn't be eagerly anticipating an invite to Diwali?
Want an invite? Be unequivocal about your support for the community instead of suggesting parents should be notified if their child joins a GSA.

Bro, because being seen with a public gay individual is basically the least someone running to be Premier of the entire province should be open to if they are serious about LGBTQ equality.
The subject is so clearly uncomfortable for Kenney that he is obviously not very supportive of the community. Whether it is uncomfortable for him personally or because of a craven political optics concern is irrelevant.

Fair enough I was using hyperbole to make a point however celebrities should be the last people politicians talk to to set policy. Her life experience is significantly different than the average person do to her access to money.
Also Is she living in Alberta right now? I know she was living in LA and Portland for quite some time. Though she was around Calgary when her and Edwards got together.
Mike Morrison makes more sense to sit down with to talk about Alberta LGBT issues.
Kristopher Wells from that article makes a lot more sense to talk to
The Calgary Pride organizers make a lot more sense to talk to.
You make a lot more sense to talk to.
LGBT people within his own party make more sense to talk to.
It was gotcha journalism. There is no good policy reason to sit down with KD Lang. If he had done it the article would read Kenny out to score cheep points after being rejected Fromm Pride. And Why is Kenny talking to celebrities instead of real people. He couldn't have won this one.
The real issue of that should be being discussed is

Wells said as far as he knows, Kenney has had no engagement at all with the LGBTQ community during his leadership campaign, which has caused further unease for many.

If he is great, but he should be letting people know. It wasn't imperative that he meet with her, but how could it have been viewed as anything but a good political move to do so if his party is truly trying to shed their anti-LGBTQ reputation?

I think you're both criminally understating KD Lang's significance in the Calgary LGBTQ landscape and leaping to conclusions that aren't very likely.
I don't believe this would be viewed as scoring cheap points, why do you? I don't think there's anything cheap about having a real conversation with a significant figure in the community when invited to. I think the disconnect here is you've shown you really have zero idea how significant KD Lang is, not as a celebrity, but as a member of the LGBTQ community.
If you can't begin to understand that (which I'm gathering based on calling her a d-list celeb) then how can you really understand this situation?

I do not understand KD Langs role in the community so you do make a fair point there
I still stand by my position that a last minute invite puts Kenny in a no win situation and he shouldn't be expected to drop his current plans. The real issue is that he hasn't consulted with anyone not that he didn't respond to a Mike Morrison joke that became a real offer.

I feel like you're missing the point on purpose. The point is that Kenney could meet with KD Lang, or Morrison or Wells, or the Pride organizers - but he has shown no interest in doing so.
The UCP claims they've turned the page on their past issues with the LBGTQ community yet the favorite (yech!) in the leadership campaign won't avail himself of an opportunity to speak with the community before the Pride parade.
UCP - shame ####, different pile.

That's the exact point I am making. the post you quoted says exactly what you are saying.
My issue that using KD Lang as the catalyst for this argument isn't a valid criticism. Criticize him for not meeting with anyone don't criticize him for his last minute rejection of KD Lang.

No one has been suggesting he must only meet with KD Lang and people have been complaining about this issue within the UCP long before her offering Kenney tickets and a discussion. Until Kenney actually does something to show support for the LGBTQ community people will question his motives for any avoidance or deflection on the matter.

KD Lang's offer was a response in a thread where Mike Morrison was reaching out to Kenney to come to various Pride events, including the concert. I'm sure Mike Morrison and KD Lang wouldn't be put out if he actually is busy, the point is that Kenney has put zero effort in meeting with that community at any point.

Is accepting concert tickets for a meeting even legal? (Obviously, he could still meet her without accepting the tickets.)

Is the elephant in the closet here that Kenney just might actually be gay? Is attempting to distance himself from the association with LGBTQ because he fears that would jeopardize his leadership chances?

Unless he thinks that talking to any member of the LGBTQ community or making commitment to equality a policy requires attending a KD Lang concert I don't think he should be using that as an excuse.
