If we could just have a series of days, say maybe the next three and a half years, of stories where the worst thing Trump does is stare at the sun, I would be good with that.

I am not totally sure that is the right question to have asked.

No, those views are never "acceptable" to hold. NEVER. 2.3 million people lost their lives in WWII fighting the scourge of fascism and nationalism. This is not an issue of free speech. That is a gross reframing of the issue by those looking for an excuse for their ignorance. That is the biggest problem in the United States IMO. People use the Constitution and the protection it affords to shield their prejudices and hate. Free speech does not mean you have the right to spew hateful rhetoric and antagonize others. This is all about the hatred taught to so many, and the woeful ignorance so many Americans are willing to display to maintain their membership in their social circles. There is no "gotcha" involved, this is what America is.

That link wasn't really working for me. Does it actually provide the poll question?

the news is insane now. Yeah Trump glanced at the sun without his glasses, so what? i did that too just to try and see how bright it really was. Didn't you?
Liberals don't have to mock it and Conservatives don't have to defend it.

On the other hand people generally under report their racist views in live polls so you need to use other questions infer racism. 9% is a very low estimate.

Predictably excellent article on recent events by Haidt, through his usual lens.
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics...rilege/537519/
Quote:
The sociologist Robert Bellah coined the term “American civil religion” in the 1960s. He was referring to the fact that despite the absence of any official religion, Americans approach citizenship and nationhood in ways that are recognizably religious. We treat our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution as sacred texts; we erect memorials to our martyrs (and then punish or shame anyone who dishonors them), and we expect the president to transcend politics and play the role of high priest and chief unifier in times of national crisis.
That’s what made President Trump’s press conference on Tuesday, August 15, so astonishing. He had failed to condemn Nazis and the KKK on the day of the main march, even after a young woman was killed in an act of terrorism. On that Saturday he condemned hatred, bigotry, and violence “on many sides,” and then sent out a tweet that was a clumsy and inadequate attempt to play the role of high priest.

You did too, don't deny it. Everyone looks at the sun briefly first to locate it, then angles their cardboard box or puts on the glasses.

It's human nature to find some humour in even the worst situations. You can probably forgive the world for having a laugh at the disaster of a president's expense anytime now.

Well yeah. People realize it isn't any more dangerous to look at the sun during an eclipse than at any other time, right? The reason we were warned not to do it is because during an eclipse we have reason to stare at the sun for more than a few seconds, and if the sky is dimmed we may not naturally look away. It's not as though during an eclipse the sun puts out special rays that burn out your retina just by looking at it for a couple seconds.

What does "it was just a comment" even mean? It's a message board, comments get responses. I don't know why you expect to just post stuff that makes no sense and have no one ask you wtf you're talking about.

sure, we all had a chuckle. But the front page of the NY Post? Yeah i know it's the NY but is just seems the so-called liberal media is shooting itself in the foot. Go after the real issues and get rid of this president, not this petty stuff. The picture of Trump looking at the sun should be a fun snippet on page 42.

I don't know what you're having such a hard time with, you posted an article, I commented we've all probably thought the same things, for me it was the "American civil religion” phrase, and that was about it.
But feel free to carry on overanalyzing my comment
