Why didn't I think of that, Just tried and it works great. Then I moved it and blinded myself so for anyone else just look at the sun briefly and then just turn away and everytime you blink you will see the eclipse for like 5 minutes . . .

Snopes says you can sneak a peak through selfie mode. UV rays can still reflect off the screen and into your eyes though, so don't stare at your phone for the whole event.

If you have an iPhone, the lens is wide enough that it shouldn't burn in.

Can you watch the eclipse through your phone’s “selfie” mode?

You can view the eclipse through your phone’s “selfie” mode so that you can watch it on your screen. That will spare your eyes, but be sure to make certain it won’t burn your phone’s photoreceptors; for example, Apple says iPhones and iPads are safe to point at the sun because the lens is so wide, meaning that the full force of the light the sun emits is relatively dim, but if you use a telephoto clip-on lens or something else to magnify the sun and its light, a filter is probably a good idea.

I'm so happy/surprised its such a clear, beautiful morning in Calgary today, I thought the smoke would be a dick today and ruin things. Prime eclipse-watching weather out there, I need to time out my morning break accordingly.

Apologies if this has been asked before, what time is it supposed to be at its maximum extent in Calgary?

Most camera sensors have an overload protection too so the electronics shouldn't be vulnerable to being overloaded. Yeah it's more if you had a lens that wasn't wide angle you could overheat and fry the innards of a camera (a guy had a youtube video of that a few days ago, pretty cool).

Looks like the partial has started to me, looking through my lenses.

For a partial eclipse, clouds don't actually hurt that much, viewing the sun through clouds with eclipse glasses and a clear sky looks almost identical, just dimmer. It sucks for seeing the corona though for the total eclipse.

Tweets from people in the totality path who have been waiting for years but will be obscured by clouds are about as sad as you'd expect them to be.

I'm just using binoculars with the eye piece pointed at the wall for viewing. Works great

It's dimmer out there for sure. 30 minutes until peak.

No. It will be unnoticeable unless you're looking carefully at shadows.
