Well I certainly hope a few more tennis fans were made in this country this week, Denis still has 4-5 more years before he even reaches his prime so it should be a fun journey to follow. Roger goes for 30-0 to start the year in majors and 1000 events tomorrow, and in all likelihood ensure he will get to #1 this year given the points defense situation.

Svitolina followed up crushing Halep yesterday by demolishing Wozniacki today (6-4, 6-0)

Denis announced earlier today that he won't be playing in Vancouver as he's exhausted and needs some time to recharge.

Commentators are speculating that Fed may have a right arm or shoulder issue, speed on his first serve is way down.

Yeah, Fed's clearly had something go wrong. Will he skip Cincinnati? Before this, his return to #1 seemed like a fait accompli. I'm kind of confused as to why he hasn't taken an injury time out though.

Not sure if Roger will say what happened in the post-game presser, but he looked like he wanted to end the match as quickly as possible.

I don't think it was a serious injury, we do on occasion need to remind ourselves that he's still 36 years old and some days you're just gonna wake up and not be up to it. Maybe he skips Cincinnati, or maybe after a few days off he's ready to go again. Either way we know his focus will be on being 100% for New York, #1 as great as it would be isn't anywhere as important as being ready for the major. With the Montreal win Zverev is now, along with Tsonga, the only players to have more than one 1000 title since the big three and Andy took over. I wanna say he should be a top 3-4 favorite in New York, but his major record this year is weak so who knows?

He claims it was just aches and pains basically, but I don't know whether I believe that. Him taking balls later on the second serve is probably just an adjustment to Zverev and the wind, but you don't change your service motion, ever, unless doing it properly hurts. Whether it's an elbow or a shoulder or whatever, it's got to be something. Best case scenario he pulled or tweaked something and a few days of rest and physio he'll be fine. But I doubt we've seen the last of months-plus long rest and recuperation breaks for Fed.

Most of the Canadians are in Vancouver this week.

Unfortunately, Roger has withdrawn from Cincy. Which means Nadal will be the new world #1 next Monday. It sucks because I wanted him to battle it out with Federer this week in the finals and have him win it that way. Still incredibly happy for Rafa to regain the world #1 ranking at age 31 what a year, after the last several I never imagined he would again be world #1. No matter how short his stay at #1 is still a great accomplishment Vamanos!

Well, there it is after all.

I'm gonna choose to blame him seeing Coldplay as the real reason. If he sees Slayer before the US Open he'll win it without losing a set.

Since Fed pulled out of Cincy he won't get the free points needed to overtake Andy Murray so if Andy plays US Open he will be #2 seed and Fed #3....if either play

Looks like Shapovalov will not be given a wild card entry into the US Open for some reason. Hope he makes it through qualifying buy doesn't end up in Rafa's half

Yeah, confirmed below that this is the case.
Tom Tebbutt@tomtebbutt
The US Open has just announced its eight wild cards - Denis Shapovalov is NOT one of them
