He's now got a serious shot to qualify for the US Open on ranking. No need to go through qualifying. The top 104 get in.

Would love a Zverev-Shapovalov SF, and it definitely could happen. I said it yesterday but what an insanely entertaining tournament this has been, easily the best of the year outside Australia.

That QF against Mannarino is going to be reaaaaaaly interesting. Because Shapovalov will now experience something he's never had to deal with as a pro: expectations.

Also, guaranteed there will be a let down after this.

I gotta admit. I thought he had no chance beating Nadal. I was just hoping for a close match, maybe Him losing 6-4 -6-4 at best. He played incredible. Very exciting!

It reminded me of a match a year ago (or maybe it was two years ago) at Indian Wells when Nadal played Sasha Zverev. Rafa ended up winning that match even though Zverev could and probably should have won it. I was thinking that Denis was going to repeat the Zverev moment, but in the end, I was pleasantly surprised.

Bruce Arthur ✔ @bruce_arthur
An exciting Canadian long-haired left-handed tennis player with all-court groundstrokes and a one-handed backhand is basically bizarro Milos

I had predicted 6-2, 6-2 Nadal. That was the most fun I've had watching tennis, outside of Roger this year.

So Denis is now the youngest 1000 quarter-finalist ever, and the youngest player to beat a top two player in the world since Rafa beat Roger in 2004.

On a technicality, yes. The Masters Series began in 1990, and Michael Chang was 16 when he reached the QF in Cincinnati in 1988 in the predecessor to the Masters.

Penny was at the match last night in Shapovalov's box. There was some guy who scored 894 NHL goals there as well.

He'll be in regardless of what happens now. If he is somehow not in the automatic qualifiers, he'll receive a wildcard birth based on his play this summer for sure.
