Enough for what exactly? Fuelling media narratives about hanging with big bad bubble teams like Winnipeg and Los Angeles? Or keeping up with such truculent contenders as Pittsburgh, Chicago, Nashville?

How could he? His goaltending was garbage. Taking risks with your dmen when your goalie can't save a beach all is just asking for losses

The big and maybe only question I have is goaltending over the next 2 years. You never know how Smith and Lack are going to fare, but if they can get top 15 GAA and SV% they should be a helluva team.

Having the current AHL and. ECHL goaltending is looking very positive beyond this and next season.

I would like to see Smith help carry the Flames to the Conference finals in 2018 and then Parsons goes the distance to the SC finals in 2019. One can dream.

Is anyone else concerned about the goaltending getting in the way of "doing something special"?

Of the 8 teams that made the playoffs in the West last season, I think objectively the Flames have the worse goaltending... and isn't that known as the most important position?

Being objective! *ducks*

Yes. I think Mike Smith will do a fine job. However, I don't think he'll be good enough to allow the Flames to do anything special.

I'd love to be wrong though, and I also don't really blame Treliving. None of the options were much better (if at all).

Good goaltenders like Bobrovsky, Dubnyk and Crawford can fall apart in the playoffs and lesser goaltenders like Fleury, Allen and Rinne can catch fire.

If you're top ~20 in goaltending and your goalie isn't slumping at the wrong time, it's not much of a reliable bottleneck OR advantage in a seven game series. Goalies can win/lose you a series but it may not be the goalies expected to win/lose you a series. Hell Jonas Hiller stole us a series a couple years back.

You're not alone. I like Smith but goaltending is the biggest wild card. Again.

This is the fourth or fifth time someone in the organization has said this recently (re: the window). I'm kinda impressed they're laying their cards out on the table so openly.

It's one hell of a dubious claim. Hard to steal a series when you get pulled in the deciding game after allowing 2 goals on 3 shots.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bennett drop them 5+ times, don't under estimate Hamonic or Stone either. Would be nice to see Brouwer take a step in that roll aswell.

Yeah it's is clearly how they are thinking. And as a fan, I am very optimistic. and it is exciting. There are signs this team is poised to do very well.

But let's face it, talk is cheap and there are some obstacles before this team starts accomplishing "something pretty great".

Getting out of their division. Anaheim is the 800 pound gorilla and this team needs an answer before they can go anywhere.

The team was still middle of the pack in the regular season and had a losing record in regulation. Goaltending has been a factor for sure, but at the end of the day, the reasons really don't matter. Winning teams win.

So if there's a 3 year window, its time to start winning. A start like last year would be disastrous.

I like that the organization is talking about success. Teams that win have expectations. Expectations crush the weak. Other than cinderella runs, good teams are expected to do well each year and reach those objectives. Itīs about time we have a winning attitude and believe we can do something.

Exactly. It raises the bar.

Rebuilding is an excuse for bad play. I hate teams that, after 5 (or 10) years of rebuilding say things like "we expect to be better and to challenge for a playoff spot this year". Way to set the bar high, guys.

Talk like championships. Make the goal championships. Setting the time-frame to start now says: we expect to win.

I love hearing them talk like this.

I remember Cory Sarich in an interview once talking about all you have to do is reach that #8th seed, and then anything can happen.

That really irked me how their apparent goal was 8th.

They proceeded to miss the playoffs for 4 years.
