I don't think it'll happen. This is plea to get the ball rolling on a new stadium. They need the public to know the situation, and what better way to do it than a threat?

The Vikings threatened to leave if they didn't get a new stadium.

I think the 49ers are doing the same thing to get the State to build them a new stadium.

The NFL is absolutely ruthless when it comes to stadiums. They demand the tax payer build the stadium to be used for 8-10 home games per year and than turn the thing over to the billionaire owner to reap all the benefits. The NFL teams are probably the only franchises in pro sports who are lucrative enough to own and finance their own stadium but the don't. Theres a reason that leage is so profitable. The owners yield more clout than any other sport in North America, and get catered to, even though they're among the last people that need it.

Sports teams, as a business have such ridiculous tactics. Could you imagine any other business threaten to leave unless the city builds them a giant office tower?

Twins are getting that new ball park paid for by the tax payers through a sales tax increase of IIRC a 1/2%. Once you build it they whine about lack of revenue and demand they get all concession and parking.

What I can't understand is why these owners don't built their own fricken stadiums.

Well, if that buisness generated tons of tourism, tax revenue and political points then yes.

Alberta commonly gives tax breaks to companies to move to AB ... what's the difference?

It's not like they're moving to Santa Clarita. For a team that plays eight times a year it's not a huge move to Santa Clara(though it is about 60km south of Candlestick).

Ironically, this stadium is located only a couple minutes away from where the Oakland A's want to build.

The Lion's field size is standard...the end zones are 20 yards deep...the CFL actually changed them from 25 to 20 when BC PLace was built. Montreal and Edmonton have always had the end zone corners cut because of the tracks in their stadiums. I think that Hamilton might have a nice or two out of their end zones as well because of how tight the stands are to the field.

I really used to hate owners that moved teams from one city to another....but if I'm in their shoes, I can sort of see why they do it. Really it's the cities and states themselves that let this stuff happen.

Indianapolis has a stadium and attracts the Colts from Baltimore who's Memorial Stadium was pretty old and bad at the time. So they make a sweetheart of a deal to the Colts and they pick up and move. I still think it was a bit classless how they just picked up and left. Later Baltimore builds a stadium and steals Clevelands team. Cleveland ticked off about losing their stadium goes and builds a new stadium to get an expansion team. Houston loses their team to Tenessee on the promise of a stadium, so they go build a new stadium too so they can get an expansion team. St.Louis did the same thing to get the Rams out of L.A. Los Angeles has yet to build a new stadium, and what a surprise no NFL team in L.A!

If these cities and states didn't always cave in, I'm sure NFL owners would look at using their own money to build these stadiums. But why spend yours when someone else will do it for you?

Oakland As want to build in Fremont, which is about 15 miles from where the Niners want to build in Santa Clara. If it goes through, The 49ers are going to play super close to where the Sharks currently play in San Jose (about 5 miles away).

I can tell you the reason that the teams are moving from SF and Oakland closer to San Jose...because people have more money in this area and will spend the money on SEASON tickets. It's a trend because a lot of the tech firms are located in Santa Clara and San Jose. I live here and I totally see it. SF has a lot of people living there, but the majority are young single people like my sis, who are just starting off in their careers. However, in Santa Clara and San Jose, it's people that have been working for a while, are married (so they have dual incomes), and can afford to go to more games and purchase season tickets. More people from the South Bay put in money to Bay Area sports teams cuz they have more money. San Jose IS the Silicon Valley where a lot of software firms are headquartered..Cisco, Sun Microsystems being 2 examples.

A's want Fremont because of the same reason, and also becaues it's halfway between San Jose and Oakland......so therefore the fans from Oaktown can still watch whatever As games they want, as well as everyone from the South Bay (Santa Clara, San Jose, Sunnyvale etc) can get to As games without dealing with traffic (the I-880 that you currently take to Oakland is INSANE).

Also, the new stadium is dubbed "Cisco Field", and I believe their headquarters are in San Jose, if not Santa Clara..it's going to be an amazing ballpark when it opens up in 2011. It's SOOOOOO much nicer than the Oakland area.
