When you're making that much coin, does it really matter looking at it from a 30,000 foot level?

It's still going to be tough to build a winning team there, it's less than a million dollars less than expected ($13.25 to $$12.5).
Coilers are going to suck! One year before the rebuilding starts!

That $750k will be eaten up by Russell's buyout before long.

Chia.." and win the Cup in short order"
How about making the playoffs for the second time in 11 years first?

$12.5 is still as cap crippling as $13.25.

Thats what I mean, it means little to nothing to 'the team' but that $6M would mean a lot to an individual.

The public shaming will now turn 100% on him. "Connor did it, now you better do it too or you're a selfish, greedy pig."
Connor showing that leadership again. Now it's your turn.

Essentially, they knew McJesus was going to get paid, but how do you pay him a ton of money and not piss off the fanbase who expected a $9.7M contract a year ago
1) Leak a huge dollar contract ($13.25M/8 years) - check
2) Leak rumblings McJesus decided to leave money on the table - check
Then boom, official number comes in under original leak, McJesus is heralded as a great leader, and also gives some control with Draisaitl as they can clamor that McJesus left money on the table and so should you.
When you have bloated contracts for Russell, RNH, and Lucic, that $750k savings is not much in my opinion.

No. It is scientifically proven to be slightly less cap crippling.

It will be highly entertaining to watch all the Oiler fans that were certain it would be $9.7M now begin to muse about how awesome and team-friendly this is.

I actually thought it would be around 11 something. Still cap impacting obviously, but the Oilers played this pretty well. That leak allowed them look good in all this, like it's some huge discount.
