Help, save, whatever.

I used to like Thornton but something about his stupid ugly beard just pisses me off.

He is a difficult player to play against. He is chippy, some would consider him borderline dirty.
He has lost foot speed as you might expect with the amount of hockey he's played and he is 38.
San Jose must have really wanted him and the AAV increased because of the term.

Would rather have Sharp over Thornton. That was before factoring cap hits.

The contract doesn't reflect current market value, its both a bump up for taking a 1 year, and a bonus for a legend because they somehow still have $9 mil in cap space.

Thornton is still a great player. He doesn't need foot speed when hes as creative with the puck as he is, he puts the puck on his linemates tape in god-like fashion. He's Gaudreau except with the added bonus of an incredible reach.
The most I would've gone is 7m as he did just put up 80 points, but like someone said, you can't lose both Marleau and Thornton.

You may be the only person on the planet who would take Sharp over Thornton straight up ignoring salaries.

He still has an outside chance at 60 assists if he stays healthy. Worth 8 mil? Hell no. But whatever, Sharks want to cling to the life support that their current core is on since they have no one to replace him.

I like this contract a lot better than the Marleau one.
The Sharks didnt really seem to have anywhere to spend this money anyway.
Might as well give it to a guy like Thornton to reward his loyalty.

Yeah, Getzlaf is another example of why you don't need foot speed if you have elite puck protection and play making skills. Damn I wish we had Getzlaf though. He's like Thornton except slightly less godly at passing and way more godly at laying people out. Guess I'm still sad that we missed out on him in 03
Edit: and a little lot drunk

i would put my money on collusion and cap circumvention
Sharks pay up in 17/18 because they have cap space. Next season, if they don't have cap spacce, then look for Thornton re-sign for less (aka a gentlemen's agreement). And the money will even out over the next few years, and the sharks will maximize their chances to win a cup.
It woudl have been as if the flames signed Gio for $19m in 12/13 and then gave him 1m each of the next 2 seasons to average out at 7m over 3 seasons.

In a cap world players are worth a percentage of the cap which really has not changed much since the salary cap was introduced in 2005. The Flames are in an extremely fortunate position to have all their top players under contract or essentially cost controlled at under $7.0 m for the next three years, but their time is coming.

Yes....and then they jettisoned McLellan and made the Cup Finals the next year. Correlation perhaps?
Even so, $8M? I know its a 1-year deal but this seems like the 'Marleau left Premium.'

I don't think the NHL has any problems with the Thornton contract. I'm sure they do have a problem with the ridiculous signing bonuses some players are getting. Once again we will probably need a lockout in order to save the owners from themselves. The players are set to earn around $150 million in signing bonuses for the 2020-21 season (CBA renewal year). That number will only rise. Right now, Gaudreau and Monahan are set to receive signing bonuses for 2020-21, but wouldn't be surprised if Tkachuk joins that group.

I find it funny that he says he wishes marleau would of stayed in San Jose.. well maybe if he didn't ask for the moon and the organization could have had money to spare to sign marleau. Regardless I bet Joe follows Patrick next year
