It should be noted, however, that this includes the 10.55 million cap hits of Joffrey Lupul and Nathan Horton who will almost certainly end up on LTIR. They're still well within the 10%-over-the-cap-in-the-offseason threshold allowed by the CBA.

Yikes. Why not over pay like this on a dman and plug an actual whole on the roster. They would have been far better off getting alzner on the deal he signed with the Habs.....

Well if there's one thing I like seeing as much as the oilers screwing up, it's the leafs screwing up.

You wonder if they might be thinking about trading JVR for one and this would then fill his spot. They were shopping him for Hamonic at the draft.

I think the Leafs are Stanley Cup contenders. They are one defence man away.

Still need to be cap compliant prior to putting guys on LTIR.

I suspect they trade JVR for a D now.

This is what the Leafs do best, horrible overpayment on UFA day. They had Finger, they had Clarkson, now they have Marleau. To get a guy locked down for his 38, 39 and 40 year old years with a full NMC for only 6.25 million, what a steal.

Can't put those players on LTIR until day 2 of the regular season, so they'll need to make some changes prior to the start of the year, regardless. Edit - beaten

I really like the first 2 years, he's a great finisher still and put him with someone like Marner and he's going to be great

that 3rd year could cause some issues though, but all in all I think they realize they have a big window the next 2 seasons.

They were after Hamonic. Then went after Stone.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
$14.5 M in signing bonus money over three years
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Marleau: year 1) $8.5M 2) $6 mil. 3) $4.25

Full NMC.

77% of the contract is signing bonuses.

This is probably true, at least for this season and maybe next year.

The new problem under the current system is coming to the fore now: The "window" comes earlier like it did for Pittsburgh and Chicago, but unlike those teams, the window is now incredibly short with the current restrictions on second and third contracts that they never had to deal with. Top-heavy teams will now struggle to win because they must do so inside of a single season or two. I think in the long run it may be more advantageous to have a team built around a larger group of slightly lesser players, which will remain intact for several more years.

Well it makes sense. Maple Leafs still have their good players like Matthews, Nylander, Kappanen, Marner and others are still on cheap ELC contracts so they can still afford him and he might be a good teach the young guys some things or two. Once they get off the ELC contracts, Marleau's contract should be done. Will this signing improves the Maple Leafs, it all depends. If Marleau can still play the way he plays in San Jose, this deal helps them tremendously. It might give a playoff spot and more rounds but not enough to win the Cup though.

that's a bit of a surprise...

though there was a lot of chatter from bobby mac on this, i am surprised that the AAV and length were so high?!

i was hoping for Marleau, but wouldn't have paid more than 4 at 2 years...obviously that wouldn't get it done, but i mean the guy is 37 years otd....

I love the Leafs. They always do get their hometown boys... when they're a smidge under 40 and can barely play anymore. As is tradition
