The Flames are actually paying about the same amount for Smith as Winnipeg is for Mason. But I think this came down to the priority the Flames set on Smith's ability to start +55 games.

I think the Stone deal is fair market value. He's a #4 defenceman who will play as a #5 on the Flames. Good insurance signing in case of injuries

That is s very good point. Smith has never played behind a defense with the collective puck moving ability like the Flames have assembled.

At least it's only two years so they can move on if it doesn't work out. The Jets are similar to the Flames in that goaltenders don't seem to pan out for them and their GAA is never as good as you would expect when looking at their blue line on paper.

Look at it as replacing Pavalec with Mason and it looks pretty good.

But IMO it's the same problem over and over with Chevy... wait and wait and wait until when he finally acts, he is settling for less.
