That's only a problem if you think Jankowski's development would flatline with another year in the AHL. And besides, the NHL is not a developmental league. If Jankowski can't out right steal a job from a vet then I have no problem letting him get more experience (and more ice-time) down in the AHL.

Edmonton rushed all their prospects to the NHL while Detroit has historically allowed theirs to over-rippen in the AHL. Given the two options I'll go with the Detroit model.

Yup. Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Bennett, Ferland with 10/13 forward spots taken. Signing a vet takes up one spot, then you've got two spots open for competition (Lazar, Jankowski, Foo, etc). 7/13 spots for younger players is hardly terrible. In all likelihood, Stajan ends up traded or spending most nights in the press box by the trade deadline.

Add in the two young guys that will likely make up the 6/7 D spots and I don't see how young players are being stifled by this situation.

It's not even about young players in the line-up, it's that Patrick Sharp ####ing sucks. The guy scored 3 more goals than Matt Stajan last year!!

Hell at this point I'd rather Chiasson.

If we're talking about Kovalchuk or Marleau or an actually top 6 NHL winger, then yes, Jankowski can go back to the NHL. But we're not.... We're talking about a guy on a "sharp" decline at 35 years old who can no longer produce.

I think this is generally true.

The one big exception, in my opinion, would be in the case of injuries.
If a young player does a great job replacing an injured vet, that tends to earn the trust of a coach. This basically what happened with the Dallas Cowboys this past year.

Also, Jankowski is a centre and would not directly compete with Sharp. I don't think the Flames would mind benching Stajan or Brouwer in place of the younger players. At least after a while.

Yep Tre signs him tomorrow and he gets roasted despite a very good offseason so far. Makes no sense.

Not sure, another source is saying he signed with the Hawks apparently.

Jay Zawaski @JayZawaski670

Source confirms the Blackhawks will indeed sign Patrick Sharp. Told it's a "big discount." Look for it to be under $1 million.

He was playing through an injury that he needed surgery for. Does Hamonic suck too? He had a really bad year last year also playing hurt

Quote:
Patrick Sharp has been playing through an injury for a while.
He is expected to meet with doctors after Tuesday's game. It's unclear if this will keep him out of the lineup, but it could hurt his trade value going into Wednesday's deadline.

Patrick Sharp will undergo hip surgery on Tuesday.
Sharp has eight goals and 18 points in 48 games this season. The surgery will end Sharp's season, or at least keep him out for what little remains. This has been a very difficult season for Sharp, who had suffered two concussions and has played through his hip issue. On top of that, his father is battling leukemia. "It's been tough," Sharp said. "I knew it was going to be a challenging year with my father and what he has been going through. Looking back on the season, I probably could have handled my emotions a little better maybe."

I think more panic and hair rending is necessary.

Wtf? Totally contradicts his earlier tweet saying that he was assured by mgmt that Sharp would not be returning.

These journalists, I tell you. Gotta stop with these definitive statements when they don't actually know for sure.

It's also a little sad that Chicago keeps reuniting their previous cup teams, at the sacrifice of up and coming players like Panarin. Reeks of desperation to cling to the last crack of light in their window.
