I love this signing. 5 quality defensemen - all capable of playing first pairing minutes. What's not to love?

FYI, for those comparing this 'stacked D' to the D core we had in 2009/10 (probably mostly just oiler fans doing that):
2009/10
Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Regehr, Sarich, Giordano, Pardy
$22.391 million, 39% of the $56.8 million cap
2017/18
Giordano, Hamilton, Brodie, Hamonic, Stone, Kulak (?)
$25.120 million, 33% of the $75.0 million cap
Plus, our forward group right now is not only much younger than what we had back then, but much, much deeper. Especially at center ice.

Maybe you should be asking yourself why "that sort of garbage is sent" your way all the time.
Posters who manage to post without condescension towards others don't have this issue.

This may have all been posturing while trying to attract Stone

It's genuinely laughable how much we over-valued that group.

Boom. Loving this.
Now when we watch flames games we don't have to spend a percentage portion of it cringing when our 3rd D pair is on the ice!
Remember how you felt when wideman was out there? Just waiting to be scored on. Or Bart or Engelland in year 1.

I think the problem was that group missing a bonafide #1, so everybody slotted in too high. We thought Bouwmeester would be that guy, but he wasn't.

I really like this signing. If a key D man goes down in the playoffs it hurts, but having a capable top 4 D man on our third pairing is key. Stone in a slightly more limited role will thrive as well.
Excited to see which kids earns the 6/7 spots.

Just last year we were paying Dennis Wideman $5.25 million and Deryk Engelland $2.9 million. Both are guys that are either out of a job, or barely hanging on to an NHL job at this point.
Stone is 27, a productive player with a good fit on the Flames, and is going to make $3.5 million for multiple years. He took a $500 K pay cut on his most recent contract in his prime playing years to sign in Calgary for 3 years.
If things don't work out, that's at least a very t radeable contract.
If it works out, the Flames have the best defense in the entire league bar none.
Please...tell me what the downside to this is again?

Throw on top that there seems to be a massive increase in players contract demands. No front loaded deals? McDavid contract? Seem like there is a lot of rumours players are asking for massive money. Drasailt 9-10? Ryan Johansen 8.5? Radulov 7? Russell 4? IMO the league is a new era of turnover from the good teams to the rebuilding and it will continue. Teams are going to need to look at setting up for 3 year stretches and then selling off to the guys who are rebuilding when contracts are expiring. This is exactly what the Flames are doing and the next 3 years they are set with very little to worry about contract wise. Depending on Tkachuk the Flames may have 0 7 million dollar players for at least 3 years when the league already has 33 and many more coming. To me 3.5 is borderline bottom pairing money these days.

Great move in my mind the kid is 27 and making less money and less term then another third pairing blueliner like Russell. And people that thought that there would be cheap decent offers in free agency, other teams are going to panic and over pay by a lot more.
this also gives the Flames a exit plan for Gio if things don't work out.
A former GM once said that you can never have too many good defensemen, we saw that in the playoffs in the past.
As well the Flames age for that blueline in outstanding, we're not talking about a bunch of 30 years old.

Players are looking for more cash because of a looming work action that could cause the loss of another season.

I really like the deal. You can trade that contract at any time and find a taker to give you back some extra draft picks if/when a prospect forces Tre's hand.
We looked like a dangerous team when Brodie got to play with someone who wasn't breathtakingly incompetent. Now that person is on the 3rd pairing, replaces an element of Engelland's physical play while being light years better with the puck and being a defenseman.
Nothing to not love.

We don't have two or three D who are bonafide NHL ready players. We might have one, between OK, Rasmus, Spoon and Kulak, who is ready this year.

Yeah but the only one over 27 in our top 5 is Giordano. And it's arguably the deepest in the league.
