so yes, couple million to spare, even with over pay... moving out stajan or bouma or both.. would help big time and take the squeeze off..

Forward group now set. No cap room for 1RW this year in free agency.
One of Versteeg, Brouwer, Ferland or Foo need to step up into that role.

I agree 2 million for a backup on a 1 year deal and at least 2.5 million for number 5 Dman UFA and/or they spend a bit more on Bennett for longer term. Since BT has said he would like two young players in 5-7 position wondering if they forgo adding a #5 UFA Dman and spend it on Bennett for much more term since still a value contract. If Bennett breaks out we are insulated somewhat.

Unlikely Bouma will be bought out since cap hit only 1.2 million if sent down to Stockton. Cap space will get more tight each year so dont need the costs rolled over to next year with buy-out.

The Chiasson mention maybe could have proven a point... I'm taking Sven, Byron, Granlund over Chiasson every single time but to put Brouwer and Versteeg in the same category is bizarre. Both have won cups, both have produced at their own respective consistent clips in the NHL for a decade...

Back to the core argument I'm taking the 3 mentioned over both Chiasson and Brouwer at this point (Not so easy to decide with Versteeg) but I do think Brouwer is in a position to serve some pretty big crow here and Versteeg is a great re-up, this guy has been underrated his whole career and brings an element to the game that HAS proven to be invaluable at times in his career.

On Versteeg's interview with Steinberg this afternoon he was mentioning that he was very keen to re-sign with the Flames and that guys are excited after the Hamonic and Smith signings. He also reiterated the bitter taste the quick out in the playoffs this spring left in everyone's mouth, and that the team will be expecting a more consistent effort his year.

Actually was sure he'd take more money somewhere else. I like having him back at this price, adds options and experience.

Good signing by management. Glad to have him back for both the term and dollar amount.
He's referring to one of the Toews Instagram chirps.

Treliving doing great with the depth moves today. Would love to see stone locked up for a decent price as well.

So is it a great deal for Calgary, or did he just want to avoid a PTO? Because it's not a great deal for Calgary if you think he's a PTO player on 30 other NHL rosters.

What it seems like to me is that he is done with moving his family constantly, is happy with the fit in Calgary, and was willing to leave money on the table to play here for another year.

Yeah for sure.
He would have been the Sabres 6th leading forward scorer last season.

Not a PTO situation this off-season at all. He was saying on Fan 960 this aft that his agent had other incoming calls, but he really wanted to get a deal done with the Flames.

I'm amazed that the Flames were able to keep it under $2M.

Maybe loaded with incentives?

My guess is that some smart ass GM told Treliving in the past days that you won’t be able to sign Versteeg for less than $2m or on a one year term. So this is his response when he does.

Pwned.

Bring back Versteeg back into the fold on a 1 year deal is perfect! I don't want to over look his point production which was great for his contract, but he exceeded all expectations.

What I like even more than his points is his moxy. He is really effective getting under the the opponents skin and plays the game honest and tough.

With Smith and Versteeg we have two of the most honest interviews in hockey, they don't know the word cliché

GG confirmed on Fan 960 this am that Versteeg had offers for both more term and $$, but preferred to stay with the Flames!

He's a very good player and everyone seems to like him. I don't know the exact history but I've always wondered why he's bounced around so many teams.

I love the fact that hes a pest. His teammates like him but nobody else does.

This team isnt nearly irritating enough and Tkachuk and King cant do it all on their own.

CapFriendly @CapFriendly
Kris Versteeg's new 1 year deal with the #Flames also includes a Limited NTC in which he can provide the club a '10 team no trade' list.

Did anyone tell him that he didnt have to write 'Edmonton' 9 times and leave the last slot for Winnipeg?
