I just think it's great that the team that was most responsible for killing the 2nd contract early into the salary cap era is feeling the pinch from these 2nd contracts. McDavid is a great player, and if we had a guy like that I wouldn't be too upset about having to pay him. But these speculations on Draisaitl are crazy. I think he'd be overpaid at 8, and that's not a knock, it's just that one season of solid production and one season of star level production probably shouldn't get you into the top 20 contracts in the NHL.
I'd love to be in the room when Chiarelli explains to Lowe why Drai is getting paid like a superstar. Something something Thomas Vanek.

From a dollars perspective it's a bargain. McDavid will easily generate that sort of revenue for Katz. It may handcuff the team a bit in terms of perennially being a top end contender. But the choice is don't pay him that kind of money...or trade him for magic beans that you hope might eventually result in a short window to win. That's a no brainer, you keep McDavid and any time he gets you to the playoffs you potentially have the best player in the series.

I'd call it a good deal if Chiarelli had a reputation of good cap management.

Remember in his first year the Oilers sent Draisaitl back to the CHL just before the 40 game mark so that year wouldn't count towards his UFA eligibility. They also didnt let him play for Germany in the World Jrs that year. Some contend that this is still a sore point in the Draisaitl camp and that the Oilers shouldn't expect much concession in this contract negotiation.

This will test the Oilers scouting department big time. Dri will be getting a nice raise that will create salary cap hell for the Oilers. To be successful the team will have churn out the bottom 6 forwards on a regular basis with players making under and little over a million a season. No more relying on high first round or lottery picks
Pittsburgh has done it the past 2 years and it got them back to back Cups. Chicago has tried to do the same thing and this year it didn't pan out.
Guess will see what kind of manager Chia and his scouting staff are.

[QUOTE=CaptainCrunch;6308728]If the NHL wanted to make as much money from Connor, they would have grabbed Edmonton's ping pong ball. Yelled "Nope" and slapped a Toronto or New York Ranger sticker on it and slam dunked it back into the machine in a Darrly Dawkins like manner

I think you are under-estimating the influence Darryl Katz has at the NHL Board of Governors and with Bettman. He's very wealthy and thus his interests and the well-being of his team are very important in that group.
The fact that many here still think NHL hockey is more a game than a business, is mind-boggling.

So because Katz is rich he gets special treatment inside the BoG? He is not the wealthiest NHL owner, and his team is also not among the most valuable. In a room with 30 of his equal-stake-holding peers I don't see how or why he would receive any priority. It makes no sense.

A (deluded Oiler fan) buddy of mine and I have a bet. I said McDinglenuts $12M + $8M for the German. He said 10 + 6. He gave me the "Connor wants to take a pay cut to win a cup" speech. He went on to tell me that after the "run" Connor has really warmed to Edmonton. I am going to win.

What's mind-boggling is that anyone believes that 30 NHL owners (and the league itself) are going to kowtow to and bend the rules for the guy who owns the Oilers. So he can win. And they can't.
It is a business, and nothing could be worse for business than to make it crooked, just to benefit a team most Americans couldn't find on a map.

All NHL owners are very wealthy. No one on the NHL Board of Governors is bowing to the will of drug-dealing Bono.

So many are missing the point entirely...we aren't laughing at the Oilers because it's a bad deal...we are laughing because anyone with a brain knew it would be this high. Many Oiler fans have been delusional about the contract and honestly with the moves they have made in the last year so has their management.

i dont get the draisaitl numbers at all.. how the heck is that guy worth that much... yes he had a dynamite season but he didn't break 30 goals and the flames tied up a guy who had one more point then leon the year before for less then 7...
Is this another case of the oilers anointing players a star or superstar before they actually have to prove it?
they killed the 2nd contract years ago... why are they ignoring the several RFA years leon has to bring that average number WAY down... yes he can make nine in the ufa years.. but not in his restricted ones.. it's so puzzling.. is chai just afraid to negotiate for fear of upsetting him? soft negotiator.. soft!
he shoudl be making monahan/gaudreau money.. RFA money.. not UFA money. just because you call him malkin doesn't mean he is or should be paid like him now... what an organization...

Haha. My contacts in Edmonton now say that the pitchforks are out for Draisaitl. That he is a Judas, betraying the great people of Edmonton.
Good times

That's what makes this so awesome! Coiler fans saying that the Flames suck and that last season was a one season wonder and that they are going to win 10 Stanley Cups in a row with McJesus and compan.
Have you ever looked at the hfboard forum? Most of the usernames start with Mc, if they showed pictures of the actual posters, I bet they all have mullets and are missing a few teeth.

I love how the onus is on guys like McDavid and Draisaitl to suck it up for the greater good.. So that the team can give Kris Russell $16M and wait for Pouliots numbers to catch up to his predicted potential.

I don't think it was coincidence that the opening season of his new arena was played under what has to be the most favorable home schedule a western Canadian team has ever had. Maybe the league does this for all teams opening a new arena but if that's not special treatment I don't know what more a team could ask for.

I don't think so either, but I also expect that was pretty much a one-off. McDavid's coming-out season and the new arena crated a perfect pr storm, but novelties wear off in a hurry.
