Pfft... I rather have 13 Foos than only one McDavid.

Not to mention many of their fans thought he would take in the 10M range lol
Also the Hawks won cups when their guys were on cheaper deals

It's been mentioned here before but I can't wait to see how cap wizard chia builds this team around these 2 monster contracts. Should be fun

The amount of Oilers hatred that fogs some peoples views on this forum to the point they can't make sense of what is just a common sense hockey signing is absolutely baffling.
I dislike the Oilers as much as anyone but at the same time this is a good signing no matter how you look at it, the kid is going to be the best in the game for the next 10+ years. You do what you need to to make that deal happen. If you lose Draisaitl so be it, Draisaitl is no McDavid and if it comes down to making a choice between the two, they made the right/only choice there is to make.

Hes played 127 games.
This was his first full season.
It was impressive, done get me wrong, but I'm not etching his name in granite next the All-Timers just yet.
He wins a lot of personal awards, I'll give him that.

I have Oiler fan buddies who were convinced they would sign McLovin to a 10M MAX cap hit per year because McDavid was smart enough to know the Oilers needed cap room to compete.
Yeah, not so much.
Going to be hard for Chia to build a solid team around that, especially with the Lucic, Sekera and Russell, contracts plus whatever Draisaitl gets hanging over his head.
HANDCUFFED.

In a vacuum, the McDavid contract is good for Edmonton. Buys three years of UFA years and gets him for the 18%. But add in the other salaries, and the Oilers are in a world of hurt. If Draisaitl gets $9.5M, they're screwed. They'll have 13 guys under contract come next season with $10M of cap space to fill out the roster. They won't be able to rely on guys like Pool Party either, as his bonuses could put them further into cap hell. This is going to be entertaining as hell.

Hockey writers named him the most valuable player in the league.
His peers named him the most outstanding player in the league.
He won the scoring title by 11 points.
He's 20 years old.
I think it's fair to assume he will be the best player in the league throughout the duration of that contract without 'etching his name in granite' next to the all-time greats, no?

I would guess that the Nuge will be the casualty of this plus Draisatl contract.

I didn't forget, he's not guaranteed a main roster spot and if he hits bonus he's something like a 3 million plus hit, so if he makes the team it actually makes it a bit tougher with the bonus dollars.

He could decide that his true calling is finger-painting tomorrow for all I know.
Hes an excellent player, there is no question, I just think they're jumping the gun a bit at the moment.
Anyways, maybe its just me and my opinion, I cant remember the last time the chequebook was thrown at someone after such a short time.

and replace him with who.
bad example as kassian is good value for what he's now getting paid. most people I spoke with thought the oilers would end up giving him 2.5m.
they need to find more value contracts like that if they're going to pay Drai and mcdavid 22m per year.

Better hope the CAD rises, if it stays stagnant or goes down the Oilers could be in big trouble. Projecting the salary cap to continue to rise is foolish and seems to be what a lot of Oilers fans are claiming will happen. Not true

I dont know that I agree with that.
The Salary Cap will continue to rise, I cant even imagine a contraction while the PA has their escalator.
It'll keep going up, just not by much, which is pretty much the design.

^The escalator only allows the union to move the cap by 5% above what it would normally be. They can't make it grow 5% every year without fail. If revenues contract or stagnate, the cap contracts or stagnates, even with the escalator, since the union always uses it. (then bitches about how unfair escrow is).

Another lockout will likely do some long term damage to the league and for the players.

A lockout is a 100% certainty already. The question is whether either side is willing to push for another cancelled season.
When McDavid's contract is announced, expect to see big dollars paid as bonuses at times. Lockout proofing is a thing as players and agents make sure they get money, even when they help halt the league entirely.

The King of Secondary Assists.
His stats are inflated just like Westbrook's because McDavid always gets a touch while on the ice.
Still a great player though. Both are MVPs in their leagues this year.
Both will likely not win a championship with their current teams.

Are we seriously arguing whether McDavid is the best player in the league?
