Solid deal for both parties. Don't like him as a player but good to see him overcome some of his off-ice challenges and rejuvenate his career.

Yeah, don't like Kassian as I think he goes beyond gritty to dirty, but Bouma needs to step it up or he won't be in the league.

Hands up if you trade Bouma for Kassian?
I suspect there is a lot of Flames fans with hands up, but zero Oilers fans who make that trade.

I like Bouma, but his contract may cost him opportunities in the long run.

Why would his contract cost him opportunities in the long run? It expires after this season

 Pretty meh IMO
 |
Any teams lineup would look meh when you put stupid line combinations together with 50% of the players in the wrong positions.

I think that something along the lines of

Maroon - McDavid - Draisaitl
Lucic - Nugent Hopkins - Kassian/Puljujarvi
Pouliot - Strome - Kassian/Puljujarvi
Stepyshev - Letestu - Caggiula

There is a definite weakness on the right side with Eberle gone, I think that the Islanders have shown that Strome is better as a center than a winger as well.

All things considered I think that is a playoff team but one that requires some deft moves still and with a lot of hope that Puljujarvi is able to find some of the potential that made him a top prospect.

This is a good deal for the Oilers and a good deal for the Flames, as it should be a good comparable for the Ferland deal.
As for Bouma or Kassian, no question you take Kassian. Guy can be a physical presence and is very willing to drop the gloves. Bouma isn't a good fighter at all when he ever drops them, and if he's not blocking shots, he's really not contributing much. Bouma has terrible puck control along the boards and loses more battles than he should given his size and strength.

Good contract actually - I figured he would get a bit more.
I much rather like Ferland as a player, but I hope this helps to set a precedent.

He is a total D bag but this is a reasonable contract.

I think it's a little early to be worried about Puljujarvi.

I would agree with that - they are easily the most comparable players in the league, from their style of play, point production, their history with difficult childhoods and subsequent personal battles.

I think most Edmonton fans would pick Kassian and most Flames fans would pick Ferland if you were to ask them to pick but I think regardless both players will be significant contributors to their teams in the coming years.

Don't want to hi-jack the thread and I don't really care who plays where...but here's another way to look at the line-up above:

UFA2018 - RFA2018 - RFA2017
Lucic - Nugent Hopkins - Kassian
Pouliot - RFA2018 - Puljujarvi
RFA2018 - UFA2018 - RFA2018

Currently five top-12 forwards under contract next year.

I dunno, maybe having Lucic signed for 90-years helps even things out?

Seems like the Oilers window to win it all is.....this year!

Note that Nurse, Benning and Brossoit are also RFA after this season.

Nice deal. Give Ferly 3Y x 6M or 3Y x 6.6M max. He's more skilled than Kassian so he deserves to be paid a little more.

So looking at things, their total cap hit is now at $64.5 million including Russell and Kassian. Draisaitl is still the big one for this year.
They are also going to need another defenseman as with Sekeras injury it leaves them with 5 defensemen on the Roster.

If Draisaitl gets 7.5 it puts them at 72 million, and they have to decide if they have someone ready on the farm (doesn't sound like it), they use Fayne (terrible) or they sign someone from free agency on a multi year deal. But it gets tight.

Then next year with McDavid, Nurse, Strome, Maroon, Cagiguila, Benning and Broissent all needed raised and in terms of McDavid and Nurse and Benning significant ones it becomes ugly tight. If McDavid gets a lets say 9 million dollar raise from his current 3.775, Strome gets a million dollar raise, Maroon won't come back if he produces at the same level unless he gets 1.5 min, Nurse gets a million and a half well you know

Where do you get $64.5 from? Cap friendly has them at $57 with 12 F 6 D and 3 G signed. Plus Fayne.

No way Maroon signs at 1.5 if he has another year like last.
29yr old 6'3" 230lb 40pt player looking for a big UFA deal? There are some very big name players producing at that level making very large sums of money.

Not to mention Ryan Nothing-Happens in the same point range at 6 million a season....

Performance bonuses would be part of it I imagine.

Oilers fan denial is just the best...they are already bringing back a worse team because of the cap and McDavid's deal hasn't even kicked in yet
