26 years old with 7 years NHL experience, a strong second pairing D who is just entering his prime at a VERY reasonable cap hit for 3 more seasons. He is as close to a sure thing as you can acquire.

Just my opinion but that kind of acquisition with the quality and value is well worth the cost.

Elevates the Flames D to elite.

I get you are trying to be the mod-cheerleader for the team and try to pick apart anything you deem negative but this trade doesn't guarantee the Flames anything. It's not like Hamonic was a game changer on Long Island so lets not plan any parades or start tooting horns that we have even a top 10 blue line group as this club hasn't been close to a top 10 defensive team in a long time and until it happens it's nothing but conjecture.

Maybe Hamonic improves the defense some but this is a major overpayment for a 4th defender IMO and if this guy doesn't play a lot better than he did for the Islanders it's going to be looked at as a very large payment for a guy that's not a difference maker.

Typica EE wet blanket post / take.

I also think people are a little too hung up on the 'Top 4 Defenceman' moniker when labelling Hamonic a #4, typically if you're in that top 4 designation its malleable, sometimes you're the #1 and sometimes you're the #4 there isnt always a huge gap and #1 through 4 are generally interchangeable.

This is a steep price, but it isn't a rental situation. The core is pretty much set, in particular if they keep Backlund at a decent price. Lots of D and G depth coming up, but the Forwards will need to step. I think that is true no matter what. It probably should keep us out of the free agent market July 1, which should make some happy.

Love the deal, especially with the dynamic it adds to our already above average top four.

Adding some snarl and physicality is exactly what the Doctor ordered. Hamonic will be a #4 but is probably more of a #3.

I have feeling we'll find a way to add Stone to the bottom pairing which is going to give us a deep, formidable blue line.

Where those pics will be in the upcoming draft makes them crapshoots to ever pan out, and we do have some good depth in the prospect pool as it sits.

Hopefully we can see some magic and a top six RW added. Excited for next season!

It kind of a funny trade, in the sense that if it works out the way the Flames hope (Good Harmonic) then the picks are less valuable and the trade becomes a steal for Calgary, getting a great player for little.

If it goes the other direction, the teams sucks, and the picks are more valuable, and NYI got a steal trading a bad player for great/good picks!

The price made me wince at first, but the more I think about it, I like it: Creates a great situation for all our D prospects that are getting ready to knock on the door, solid contract, sort of local guy, rounds out our D group very nicely.

A later 1st and two seconds can get you nothing as easily as they can give you an impact player

By then at least one of our defensive prospects in Fox/Andersson/Kylington will be more than ready to go.

This is a complete steal by Treliving and extremely calculated imo.
That's a good point. If things really work out with Andersson/Kylington/Valimaki and the others, we'll have plenty of assets to trade to pick up picks, if that is what people are worried about.

I am hoping that some of our prospects are on the verge and if we run in to injury troubles etc. they can fill the holes. Time will tell, for now I am excited.

Excited for Hamonic to join the team, I think you could argue that his low salary over the next 3 years makes the price easier to take -- cap space is valuable and we still have some wiggle room.

I agree with the sentiment that our window starts now - heck, given what I saw in the playoffs, I think we might have made the finals this year if we had a goalie. Regardless of whether the value paid for Hamonic was too high, too low or just right, I am more concerned that we are "going for it" but that the goaltending is still a huge question mark... Man, I am just scared we've tied the can to a 35 year-old goalie when the rest of the team looks really good (aside from Brouwer)...

And again, for people commenting on the 'steep' price:

Hes a 27 year old top defenceman signed to a good contract for a few more years.

Players like those arent exactly low-hanging fruit.

And we're a rebuilding team thats made the playoffs twice in 4 years. I may consider calling next season the last of our rebuild, but to an effect its already over as we would likely expect this team to make the playoffs next year and if thats the expectation then you're not really rebuilding anymore.

Tied the can?

It's two seasons.

You do realize that the majority of goaltending options would have actually seen us over-commit multiple years to a stop-gap?

I cant express how disappointed I am in Chevy he couldn't bring hamonic to Manitoba. How many NHL played actually actively want to play here? Unreal. He's asleep at the wheel. What an utter #### gm.

Great trade. Congrats to the Flames.

Yeah it's go time. Expectations have to be to challenge for the cup in the next three years. It's not going to be easy as the Hawks aren't going anywhere and the Oilers and Ducks are going to be in the mix for the division title. No excuses anymore though as the rebuild is over according to management.

Just need Brodie and Gaudreau to rebound (which I'm confident they will) and it could be a very, very good year.
