All it takes is a couple injuries to decimate the defense. You need to sign Stone or someone like him for the #5. That way you won't be forced to have Bartkowski play regular minutes at any point

The Flames are a playoff team now and have 3-4 years to win a Stanley Cup. In years 3 and 4 if one of the prospect goalies pans out, and young forwards hit their primes, it could actually happen. Pretty awesome time to be a fan.
Hamonic will be turning 27. He's going into his prime years as a d-man. Other than this year, he has been a really solid defenseman. Him and Brodie are going to be a beautiful pairing, I think.
Would have rather given up this year's 1st. Hope Hamonic doesn't disappoint, this is a steep price considering Stone is still a possible signing. I wonder if this is Treliving trying to get some leverage with Stone, maybe $3.5M for Stone now? That would be one hell of a top five.
If this deal was made in lieu of re-signing Stone, then I think it's a mistake... if this is in addition to bringing back Stone, then I like it.

Just the type of D man the Flames need. Great caphit. 2 years is enough of an evaluation to determine if he gets flipped in 2019 to recoup a pick or he becomes a cornerstone for the Flames future. Hamonic has not even come into his prime yet.
1st and two 2nds is heavy I agree but u got to give quality to get quality. Treliving will over the course of next year make a move or 2 to get back a second for 2018 i am confident in that.

I really, REALLY hope his injuries/personal reasons were the only reason he struggled last season as even De Haan and Leddy were dragged down hard by him.
On the bright side of this, Hamonic contract is much better than what the Edmonton Oilers are paying Kris Russell.
The picks hurt, but they hurt a lot less without any names tied to them. At least until the Islanders draft the next Tarasenko / Kucherov etc with them.

I've seen a lot of people in this thread criticizing this deal for overpaying for a #4 defenseman. But that isn't what Hamonic is. Just because he's slotted into the lineup that way doesn't mean that the Flames have acquired another #4.
In reality, the Flames have acquired another top-pairing defenseman for an incredibly reasonable caphit. We should all be stunned and thrilled by this deal.

kid seems genuinely excited. both him and his wife grew up on farms in small towns outside of Winnipeg...so he sounded pretty happy about 'throwing themselves into the calgary lifestyle'...
so, it seems like he really wants to be a part of the City and organization, which is great to hear.
currently raving about our defense corp...
