It's a lot easier to make moves like this when you are gifted the best player in the league after ####ting the bed with your 3 previous first overall picks.

player for player this is not a good deal for the Oilers...cap space wise there is some debate. They are NOT a better team today

They replaced meh with similar meh, and saved 3.6M they can use elsewhere.
Good deal for the oil, unfortunately.

Its shuffling the deck chairs on the Hindenburg at this point.

You guys are missing the point.
Ebs only has two years left until he is a UFA.
And all UFAs now-a-days want to play in Edmonton.
Oilers to sign Eberle to a 7 x $6M deal in 2019!!

Yeah, the hope attached to this is that one of Strome or Puljajarvi can replicate the offensive totals that Eberle registered this year, and I don't see that as likely.

Why? 51 points?
It might be unlikely but thats not a high bar.

51 points would have been 4th in scoring on the Flames just behind Backlund. If the Flames shipped out Backlund we would be pretty worried about who would fill that void. If Strome isn't up to the task of being a regular who on that roster is going to step up and replace that scoring? Is Maroon going to have another career season? Letestu is more of a power play specialist. Maybe Puljujarvi but he was a massive disappointment last season and if he was a regular scratch in the AHL that's not a great bet. There's no doubt the Oilers secondary scoring took a major hit with this trade if Strome doesn't have a career season.

Are you kidding? in today's day and age that is a very high bar. Eberle was Edmonton's third best scorer.

This is just stage 1 of what will have to be a multiple stage process to free up enough cap space for when McDavid's contract kick in next offseason.
The Oilers will likely have to do similar with RNH, and probably buy out Lucic by a year from now - if not more than that.

They traded their leading scorer from the year before that. Did they manage to replace Taylor Hall's 65 points?

With a full year of McDavid and a break-out season from Draisatl. Do you see either player significantly improving on their production this year? Do you see Patrick Maroon matching his +25 goals from last year? These don't seem very likely to me.

Well yeah, Draisaitl went up 26 and McDavid went up 52.
Edit: Add on Lucic's 50?

A lot of players on the oilers had career type years, there has to be an expectation of some players dropping next year.

Trading their leading scorer from 2015-16 unquestionably improved the Oilers last year. Also, Eberle was their leading scorer three times and was top three every year except for 2015-16. He didn't make them better despite that.

Depending on the McDavid, Draisaitl and now Russell deal, the Oilers are out of the UFA game for a few years.

I think this is great for the Oilers. I would have liked Strome on the Flames for a 3rd or so and I wouldn't have picked Eberle off of waivers at his price tag. Just getting out of that contract is an Oilers win IMO.
