Since they whiffed on those drafts largely and a lot of their roster bottom guys are below average or overpaid they were "lucky". You can argue that unlucky teams simply have better organizational depth than the Flames and I believe there's some truth to that.
Ok. You can argue that. But I still call it lucky when this is the exact year that the Flames are in this position. If it happened one year from now it would be very different. Also, Kulak and Wotherspoon are both waiver eligible which is partly why they are tough to take. Even if this draft happened last year there is a good chance that one of those two would have been selected.

Also, both Gillies and Jankowski are ages that would normally be available. Because of injury and long development routes, they don't fit the requirements.

Engelland said he owes a lot to the #Flames organization: “Tree, Burkie, the owners there, Gully, the coaches, & everyone on the team."

That contract is a steal. I was expecting more for sure.

Classy guy. Loved his bite on the blueline. Was a little skeptical about signing him for any term at his age. Right now we have no defensemen who are tough along the boards and in front of the net, that's clearly our biggest need right now.

This idea that guys paid millions of dollars to be #### disturbers will suddenly stop doing their ####-disturbing job because they might have to fight once a game is so absurd.
I think you underestimate Engelland's value. The guy has a reputation for being a tireless work on and off the ice and isn't afraid to keep teammates in line if they are dogging it or not taking care of themselves. He sets a good example for a young team and I think the Flames would be wise to make sure they still have that element.

Now that it is over and he's moving on, can we agree that the Engelland contact didn't end up being half bad. Not saying it was a bargain - but for the most part he delivered.

I'm very happy Flames didn't give up assets so LV could claim Brouwer.

Also happy Flames aren't overpaying Eneglland for another year or two of service. Players like Deryk Eneglland need to be developed internally.

Not losing a middling prospect is ok I guess but I suspect every one of those exposed players will be on waivers next year.

So with Engelland, Stone, and Wideman gone . . . We seem a bit thin on our blueline. Even with Wideman as a rotational.

Still, that is $12 million in salary gone.

He's almost always on his toes when pictures are taken.

Cost us game 1. Not thanking him since that one was winnable in Honda. But good luck in Vegas.

Year 1 regular season: totally awful, I couldn't understand how a player could be that bad while making that much

Year 1 playoffs: awesome

Year 2: he's still kind of awful but he's not the worst guy on the team anymore

Year 3: hey this guy's actually not bad, I sort of wish he gets re-signed

Best of luck to Engelland, it's incredible to see a guy who keeps getting better at hockey, even at 35. That's the attitude you have got to have if you want to be great at what you do.

What did I miss re: Stone? Did someone sign him? Otherwise I'd assume the Flames will be looking to re-sign

Doug Maclean didn't like Las Vegas picking Engelland - thought they should have gone for a younger defenceman like a Kulak!

I think Stone will be back as well. Seems likely but I guess we'll see.

Not sure why Ozy's in several threads wording his opinions like they're factual.

Well I guess technically he is unsigned as is Wideman. I don't think Stone is the only option Flames will be looking at.
