So how does that work exactly? You tell Engelland what you want to pay him and his role, but that you won't sign him until free agency. If he agrees to some under the table deal, and the Flames were looking to offer him a contract (everything I've heard from the Fan indicates the Flames wanted to), then you basically ruin that relationship. That's almost like circumventing the expansion draft.
The other side of it.... Engelland shows interest, but you have a possibility of 30 other teams calling him on July 1. Any single one of them could offer him more money and now you don't get the player you want..... just to try and steal 2 from a team. It's ridiculous.
|
Yes you can tell him you plan to make him an offer as a UFA and gauge interest. If you waste a pick on a UFA they can still choose not to sign with you. Bird in the hand and so forth.

Oh hang on here, sorry that's not what I meant. Absolutely you need to know if a UFA is going to sign with you (or at least wants to).
I'm just saying you can't negotiate that and tell him to wait because you want to 'cheat' and take two players off the same roster.

Vegas had 48 hours to negotiate with any free agents, before any other team has a chance. The system was designed that way.
That's why it makes so little sense that they would select Engelland from Calgary, they could already have had him for free. They literally gave up a player/prospect for no real reason. Only thing I can think of is they literally don't want any Flames or Treliving paid them off.
Time will tell which is accurate.

It leaves less of a hole in the lineup than losing Brouwer IMO. It's more money off the books than Bouma. I suppose I'm more a fan of Stajan than you are - which is fine. And Engelland likely didn't figure into next season plans anyway. Like I said, it's not like I hated Engelland or anything.

As much as I want them to take brow.
Maybe we lose an already lost eng and Brouwer uses a ####ty season and being exposed to become super Brouwer and does something. xD

What is McPhee a moron?
Vegas gets an early UFA window. They could've selected someone and signed him anyways

Optimistic. I said this the day Brouwer was signed:

We're trending in exactly that direction. Vegas was a pipe dream that we all took a hit of.

The window is now. If you sign someone in the window, that's your pick from that team.

Wishing Engelland all the best. I really liked him as a Flame - played hard every game.
I know he has ties to Vegas - will be nice to see him reunited with MAF.
Looking forward to seeing the Flames play in Vegas next year.

Dang. I guess VGK taking our worst contract was wishful thinking.
Troy, try harder. I cannot stomach three more seasons of whatever the hell 16/17 was. Leadership, intangibles...my ass

I think it kind of shows what McPhee thinks of what the Flames had available.
I hope he feels the same way about the Oilers!

Is this still a rumour?
Some of the comments make it sound like they know for sure. I was just wondering if I missed something.

It is still a rumour because it has not been confirmed by an official source, but given that this is the only rumour involving the Flames' expansion draft selection it seems about as good as certain.

Leaves about $7.75 in space, with obviously some lower cap hit RFAs to deal with, potentially Chad Johnson resign and a bottom six UFA F. Going to be tight

Not the thread for this but....
Am I missing something here?
In what world is Sam Bennett going to command almost 3 million dollars a year based on his play in the NHL thus far?

unless he signed in the last hour, would be presumptuous to name him captain No?
