This sounds too good to be true. They picked a guy they knew would almost certainly sign with them on July 1st anyhow? I will wait until official word on this one.

Where has this been said other than people speculating that he would want to sign there because he lives there in the offseason?

We're talking about the expansion draft here. Not you beating people up in parking lots or how much you can bench press.

Taking a while to get to 5000

No guarantee they could sign him July 1st. Maybe they chatted with him, were uncertain, and felt it was best to secure those rights now?

We lost him 2 months ago, are you mental? get the knack

Through the process of an Expansion Draft we certainly did well to make it through unscathed, although its disappointing not perhaps taking advantage of it to ditch some bad contracts or acquire some assets.
But come on, we can be sad to see a player who bled red for this team and played his heart out for us go.
We may have lost him anyways, we may not, but its always regretful and sad seeing a loyal warrior leave.
I'm sure you can understand that sentiment especially based on the information that we have, which is very little.
If Vegas signed him to a $1M contract we'd all be pissed that we lost him for so little but if they sign him to a $5M contract we'd wish him well and take umbrage in having dodged that bullet.
We did well, we could have done better but really there wasnt much of our skin in this game.

Then why would they pick him if they were uncertain? Why take the chance instead of picking a sure thing?

people living in the real word realize he is gonna make 2.5M+ on the open market which is too much for the Flames to pay for a 5/6 dman
Tre was just being nice, maybe driving up the value in Vegas's eyes
Oilers just lost a guy they recently traded a 1st and 2nd for lol

Vegas had an exclusive negotiating window between June 18 to today at 8am.
If they did not pick Engelland, only the Flames can talk to him until June 25th because he would still be Flames property.
By picking him, they get the extra 4 days of exclusive negotiating rights, until the UFA interview period opens up on the 25th.

That's too bad, considering Engelland's cap hit was likely coming off the books already.
I'm guessing they couldn't send a pick/prospect to persuade them to take Brouwer's contract?
What a warrior Engelland was for us. He will be missed.

I think the Flames really needed to unload some salary to make any worthwhile moves this off-season. I think Engelland wasn't coming back anyway but I don't see much room for improvements to our roster from last year. We are stuck with Brouwer, Stajan and Bouma, and expecting Jankowski to make the jump, I don't see how we have room for Versteeg and Chiasson, let alone any other significant additions.

Now that I think of it, it is possible Engelland expressed interest in signing with Vegas but didn't want to sign with them until he saw what they did with the eleventy billion d-men they picked. In other words he wants to see the depth chart once all the flip trades are done.

Rather they take a contract like Brouwer, Stajan, Bouma or RFA like Chiasson.
This is better than Kulak, Porier, Shinkaruk

This will likely be Engelland's last player contract. It's in his hometown, and if he's interested in a post-playing hockey career, VGK is an organization which can provide those opportunities.

not really, you could have payed to get rid of Brouwer...debatable if that's better
Vegas isn't gonna sign him for 1M come on now...he is for sure making over 2M and probably over 3M

The Flames as of today have $19.5 m of cap space with nine forwards, four defensemen, and a goalie under contract. New deals are owed to Bennett, Ferland, Lazar and Chaisson, and they need to add a top-four defenseman. There is still a fair bit of room with which they can fill out the roster.

So rumour of reinhart being picked, lulz. And Colin Miller from Boston. Wouldn't surprise me if both stick with the big team.
