I'll complain about it because it does suck considering there is no alternative.
It is unreasonable to act like the Flames have a consistent pipeline of players lined up like dominoes ready to take on this role that Kulak will likely fill. The team has been trying to fill that role with players such as Wotherspoon, Jokipakka, Nakladal etc for years and to no avail. The sad alternative is that he is replaced by an aging, more expensive FA player that performs to a very similar level with nothing but downside.

I don't even see Kulak as an NHL player. If he's gone off the roster, I see it as a good thing as it'll allow someone with more potential to get called up first.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked - McPhee is a guy that values him.
He's been traded for a 1st rounder, and TJ Oshie during his career so there is obviously some value there.
Leadership type of guy that can wear the C for them.
Sure he was bad here last year but GMs tend to overlook one bad season for guys they like.
Edit: Boomer on twitter says he thinks that Engelland has been signed as a UFA and is the pick for Vegas. That would make sense too I guess.

Thinking Derek Engelland is one of the UFA's Vegas has signed, thus fulfilling #Flames commitment. Engelland lives in Vegas & would be a fit

Their cap situation really doesn't matter.
They can get other assets by taking on overpaid players.
Just because they can take on additional cap, doesn't mean they will do so for free.
But Brouwer is likely a better player than he showed last year.

He would be a good fit and hes a great team guy, he'd likely instantly wear a letter.
