I guess we'll have to wait and see, but at least Smith has proven he can carry a heavy load of shots against and games played as a true #1. That's really the primary advantages I see with Smith.

"Elliott sad to leave Calgary"

Bye Felicia!

I don't care if that makes me sound like a dick. Maybe he shouldn't have sucked if he wanted to stay?

I am not a really big fan of the Smith deal but did feel strongly that the team simply could not come back with Elliott next year. He finished with a very average .910 which is the result of him going .930 for a huge stretch and .890 for a huge stretch. Never has been a legit starter always a 1a/b type.

Elliott might be sad to leave the team but I am happy they moved on. Wish him well wherever he goes unless he plays the Flames
No goalie is ever the sole reason for a winning streak. Like you, I feel like Elliott's performance in the POs sealed his fate here. I think, however, he is capable of being a pretty solid guy. I'm not sure he gets a starter's role next year. The opportunities are very limited. I could see him in Pittsburgh as an experienced backup.

Was that ever confirmed?

Pretty sure that deal died when the Jackets took Dubois and the Flames knew they had Tkachuk.

Also according to Cody Franson's arrogant cousin the deal was 6th+ for Bishop and Drouin. Would have been a fine deal of the Flames were stuck with Joulevi

More realistically, your other options were Bishop for a huge cost, or Ramo and Hiller

I believe the deal was off the table prior to knowing Columbus' pick when the Flames signed Elliott but I could be wrong. As for confirmation, I honestly don't know for sure but this was the scenario I've seen bandied about most.

I've mentioned this a few times, he got every chance to be our starting goalie, that ball was firmly in his court and he dropped it.

I have kind of felt he was destined to go to the Jets since the season ended to be another 1a stsrter

Yeap. Dude finally got his chance and he whiffed big time, lost the job to Johnson before wrestling it back again. Then he whiffed even harder in the playoffs.

Good luck elsewhere, just not against the Flames.

Tough year to be a UFA goalie. Especially sucks for Elliott, who's never hit a big contract.

My dark horse is Pittsburgh. 1 year 2M. Pitt knows the value of having two quality goalies, and they should definitely try to keep Murray under 50 games for another few years.

Elliott had a worse save percentage playing for the Flames last season than Smith did playing for the Yotes (not a defensive team just a bad team) who were trying their best to tank the season as an organization.

I am pretty confident its an upgrade, how much of an upgrade remains to be seen. Calgary needs to be more consistent overall and it starts in goal. Ten game win streak is nice but if you HAVE to do that to make the playoffs it takes too much out of a team.

He's 2 now, and the new one isn't due until September. So, not really I just dislike Elliott.

This is not completely true. The team was terrible for the first few months of the season to the point where fans and even media were openly questioning if Gulutzan was long for the job. There's no doubt Elliott wasn't at his best to start the season but the team was hot garbage while Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, Hamilton, Brodie etc struggled to grasp a new system. Go back through all the threads in that timeline where people were considering Gulutzan a disaster and downgrade from Hartley. That wasn't all Elliott's fault.

Not as sad as watching him struggle for most of the year.

And nobody is saying it was 'all' Elliott's fault, but when your team is struggling you need your goalie to save your ass from time to time, and thats a big issue because he was as terrible as everyone else.

The fact of the matter is that the Team's Terrible start isnt all Elliott's fault and the Team's subsequent success wasnt all Elliott's doing either.

But I'd say that his struggles impacted the team to a far greater degree than his successes, and ergo, negatively.

Elliott seemed like a pretty solid guy off the ice. Even from the day he was traded, I could see him making efforts to be part of the community off the ice. Unfortunately hockey is a business where good people who don't get the job done on the ice easily become expendable. Elliott did as bad or worse at his job at the most critical time in the season. I feel bad for the person, but for the team, moving on is the right move.

Not the way he worded it. He blamed Elliott for the poor start in his first post then says in his rebuttal is wasn't all his fault. The truth as always is in the middle. Elliott got off to a poor start as did the team.
