I am typically pessimistic when it comes to this team, but I am really quite satisfied with this trade.
Smith isn't the answer for this team, and he isn't expected to be. He'll be a short-term stopgap, but I think he will be a good stopgap.
I think the Flames are very high on Parsons and could see him take a similar path to somebody like Murray on the Penguins.

Trying to grab a goalie from Vegas would be nice. I like the idea of putting a young back up in a position to steal Smith's Job.

Minus something that saw a very major Flames piece going the other way (which maybe is the better way to go but would have also caused mass panic on here) a stop gap solution and a goalie options that wasn't going to leave us all feeling 100% confident is all this team really had left for options in my opinion.
I'm happier with Smith than Elliott. Are there better goalies out there, for sure but all of those would have cost us a major piece of this rebuild, a big give to get.

Whoa, you're taking my post way too seriously. It wasn't pessimistic at all. Just something that occurred to me.

A Smith/Mason tandem is still a possibility.

If the Flames are planning on signing Johnson, why not trade Elliott's rights instead? It serves the same purpose for the Coyotes.

I have no problem with this trade, they didn't give up much, with the Flames depth in terms of blueline prospects something had to give.
I like Smith because of the way he plays the puck, a dimension that Elliot was terrible at, and he still had decent stats behind a terrible Yotes team.
Smith with his puck playing ability and the Flames defense in front of him is already an improvement over what Elliot would bring.
There wasn't much else out there goalie wise. and we got a break on the dollars.
Look, this team made the playoffs in spite of the goaltending last year, and Mike Smith is a starting caliber goalie.
With Vegas probably grabbing a few goalies tomorrow, I don't doubt that we'll know what the Flames have in the crease by next week.
At the same time, maybe its time to see what Gilles can do when pushed.

Yep I think there's a clear reason the Flames were reportedly in on Fleury and Smith. 2 year contracts and good stopgaps.

Those goalies likely cost as much as Smith to acquire or moreso. And then we're blocking the way for Rittich/Gillies/Parsoms. Rather bring Johnson back for a year and then look to promote a young goalie the year after.

I've been hoping for coreau. Not because I know anything about him, but because of the debate about whether Detroit would feel they should protect him over Mrazek and Howard.

That kind of trade is rare in any situation. I doubt Brad gets a deal that good the rest of his career.

This is the only way I can see to do so. And if one or more do develop and become our stud goalie, well, that's even better.

Treliving on the balance has done a good job but why has he earned your trust on goaltending? Name one good move so far. His moves have been defensible at best. He has missed out on several better options for the team which would have cost less as a sum total. I can tolerate Smith on this deal but nothing to do cartwheels over. I will be disappointed if Johnson is back because one of the silver lings here is Rittich or Gillies emerging as a back-up. Our over-ripening philosophy just caused us to basically lose Hickey for nothing.
