Mike Smith put up comparable numbers, playing more minutes, behind a much worse team and would likely cost less to acquire, but you'd rather have MAF?
At all costs??

Mike Smith is ridiculously underrated in this thread. I bet half the posters saying he is average or bad can be found in any thread where we played the Yotes and Smith was in net absolutely frustrated as hell by him because he would make 40+ saves.

If the cost to acquire Smith isn't exorbitant, I'd be totally fine with him as a starter.
I'm really ok with any goalie that has a decent track record as a starter. I'd also be good with taking a chance on a couple of younger goalies stuck behind starters in other cities that are eligible for the expansion draft. Guys like Raanta (although he's already 28!!!), and maybe Grubauer, but that's about it.
But if that's what's out there, it just makes sense to trade for Fleury instead if you can get him to waive his clause. The Pens need to move him, we need a starter, he's only signed for 2 years (stop gap), and his cap hit is under $6 (5.75/year). Besides that, Fleury is a more than solid starting goalie, and is still in his productive years. There's almost no downside to this except for the acquisition cost, and if I know Treliving I know he won't overpay in a trade.
Either way, just find me a competent starting goalie for this team...that means no tandems. We haven't had one since Kipper retired.

Same situation as Elliot and this gets discounted way too often by fans. Smith plays in a pure defensive system so his numbers are going to look way better than they are - it's the only thing the coyotes can do to even be remotely competitive.
Do not want Smith or MAF unless they are given to the Flames for free.

Haha. The Yotes give up the 2nd most shots in the league over the last 3 seasons with 32.8 per game on average. Some defensive system. Tippet's "defensive" system is over rated and the Coyotes suck.
Mike Smith's numbers are NOT inflated by playing for that team, coach or system.

Tippet is a defensive coach, but the team sucks. They cannot play sound defensive hockey consistently.

He's not being ridiculously underrated at all. We aren't talking about 32 year old Mike Smith as the guy is 35 years old and it's not even that he is what he is. At his age it's near certainty he's not what he used to be going forward. There is zero upside to Smith. You have to have faith he can maintain his play because it's a given he's not going to be better. You are getting an average NHL goaltender in what's likely playing out the last couple of years of his career. I hated seeing over the hill Grant Fuhr and Mike Vernon end their careers face planting in Calgary and I'm extremely lukewarm on taking on Mike Smith until he's 37. If this is the best Treliving can do then I'm a disappointed Flames fan.

Meh. Tires are meant for kicking.

I'm for Mike Smith for no other reason than people will always spell his name correctly.

Would rather risk Raanta ####ting the bed than Elliot or Smith. That being said, Elliot over Smith.

Why is it a choice between a vet or a young goalie? Why not get both?
A 2nd or 3rd in 2018 for MAF or Smith
And Gillies for Raanta or Grubauer via original team or Vegas.
Flames have 3 prospects at the AHL level right now and probably makes sense to move one of them, wouldn't want a 3 headed monster to ruin the Heats season, now would we?

Something to consider. If acquiring Smith allows us to dump one of Stajan/Bouma and open up a spot for one of our young kids, that's something we may be able to get behind. Would sure beat giving up a 3rd to bring back Elliott

I really think the Flames missed the boat when Bishop went to Dallas, so I'm prepared for a few more years of stinky goaltending and wasted seasons until a goalie comes out of the pipeline ready to take over the #1 spot.

I think you meant to say dodged a bullet, not missed the boat.

No, clearly he meant the Flames missed out on getting a high quality NHL starting goaltender because his opinion is that's what Bishop is, and that is a very valid opinion based on Bishop's track record.

Man, has anyone in this thread actually sat down and watched Smith play? Without him, that Coyotes team would have been Colorado bad. Smith played fantastic all season. I know its a weird selection process, but he was the Yotes All-Star selection. He was the best player on that team all year.
Also, I know for a fact that he is great in the room.
If you can pry him out at a decent price, seems like a no-brainer.
