Last year basically turned into a write-off for Poirer with him clearly being distracted and eventually just on LoA from the team due to an undisclosed issue in his personal life. He's far from being a total bust

Far from being a bust? He's a lot closer to being a bust than an NHL player right now. Not even debatable. Klimchuk may have a chance at being a utility player in the NHL but the bar for both of these guys is pretty low considering they were first round picks.

The hockey thus far in the final has been awesome but what's with these two day breaks between travel games. It's terrible. Is this something the nhl instituted or is it simply due to area availability. I don't recall these gaps in previous years and it really just drags out the series.

Yeah, love the optimism but I don't think too many people would bet any money on Poirier making it now.

I don't pretend to know how much is done for NBC in getting as many weekend games as possible but I imagine at the very least they want to avoid going head to head with the NBA finals. I agree though that it's really hard to get invested into a series when you have two games every six days. This is simply far too deep into June for most Canadians who have turned their attention to the outdoors. The NHL playoffs should never overlap with the opening of the CFL season but that's exactly what happens.

This is the first game I've watched on NBC this year and their in-game production was superior to CBC. The intermission stuff wasn't great though.

Yeah it's not looking good. Out of all the first round picks in that draft only 6 haven't played at least 20 games in the NHL and 3 of them are in the Calgary system

Not that it makes the stat that much better, but only 2 of them are in the Flames' system. Monahan hasn't even missed 20 games since we drafted him. It sucks that we didn't do as well as we had hoped for, but at the end of the day we did get a very good player who could potentially score 40 or more goals in a season. If you look at a lot of teams' draft records I'm sure there are a lot of misses in the later first round picks, I do put some blame on the feaster regime, but there's not much we can do about it now. At the time klimchuk and porier didn't seem like bad picks either, hindsight sucks when looking at drafts.

Poirier, Shinkaruk, and Klimchuk.

Key words "in the Flames system"
He's talking about Poirier, Klimchuk and Shinkaruk
We also have Lazar from that draft as well now, but he's over 20 NHL games played.

Don't forget Curtis Lazar. That's five first round picks from 2013. I really hope that Lazar at least turns out into a useful 3rd line player.

Klimchuk made huge progression last season, but unfortunately ended the season with a concussion, so that sucks.
Poirier took a massive leap backwards obviously, as he had a leave of absence most of the year and Shinkaruk also went backwards at least production wise.
Very disappointing and frustrating, but par for the course for us Flames fans it seems.
Thank goodness we struck gold with Johnny and our top picks since the rebuild started have all panned out so far.

It suck most guys haven't panned out. I remember hearing talk about our ''future 1st line'' with the 3 first rounders. But in the end, we got the highest scoring player in the draft from that year AND the year before.
If someone would have told me that we would have drafted the highest producing player from that year and the year before, but none of the others would pan out (although there is still time), I would have taken that gamble. And while some like to blame the Flames for drafting them, in the end the players are their own human beings who make their own decisions. The organization can only do so much to guide and help them reach their potential. It's up to the players to reach the ultimate goal of being a full time NHL player.
The Flames did their absolute best with the resources they had available AT THE TIME.

Is it bad drafting or terrible development (or the usual - a little of column A...)? Would we have developed Guentzel? I doubt it. Mind you, when you throw away early picks (Kanzig, Smith), that doesn't help either. Have we managed to develop anything in the AHL? Brodie I guess. Anything else?

As a NCAA player Guentzel didn't do much in-organization development: 44 games at the AHL level.

On our current roster:
Giordano - 144 AHL games (2004-07)
Brodie - 115 AHL games (2010-13)
Backlund - 55 AHL games (2010-11)
Bouma - 95 AHL games (2010-13)
Ferland - 64 AHL games (2012-15)

Also, I don't recall any significant players who the Flames developed in the AHL being traded away in the last while either.
So 5 AHL developed players in the last 10 or 12 years is just abysmal.
Thank goodness for Johnny, Tkachuk, Bennett and Monahan.
