context matters though...
Friedman was talking about the Ducks embarrassment of riches on the blueline and how injuries have taken a toll on lindholm, vatanen and a Fowler extension... he goes on later to speak of Theodore, Manson and Montour as guys that really stepped up.
Then he mentioned Murray's big trade tended to be to Eastern conference teams in the past - he prefers to stay away from trading to conference rivals
Friedman spitballs two options that could keep one of those DMen in the Western conference...the line that's cause all the debate?
Quote:
I can’t see him keeping one of these defenders west, unless he covets the third-overall pick from Dallas. I’ve heard the Ducks like Sam Bennett a lot, but would they really want to do this deal with Calgary?
|
you think dallas fans are freaking out about their throwaway mention too?

So Friedman says the Ducks covet Bennett and would maybe move one of their top young D for him, and that prompts a wave of Friedman is spinning junk post on here?
I bet the Ducks do covet Bennett and likely would seriously be contemplating making the Flames an offer. Friedman reporting this is junk because why? Because it causes some Flames fans anxiety to think about the Flames accepting this offer? Friedman job isn't to make you feel good it's to report what he hears. He didn't say anything about Calgarys thoughts on it, so why the up roar? The bar for many posters on which media people "know their stuff" seems to directly correlate to whether they like what outcomes they predict for the Flames, not the quality of the info or writing. It's rediculous.

In his prime I see Bennett as filling in around 6'1" / 205lbs. That's roughly the same kind of frame as guys like Toews, Kesler, Bergeron, and Zetterberg. I can only hope he can learn the little things to play like those guys.

Brule wasn't able to modify his game from being a juniors power forward into being a pro level chippy forward, putting himself in positions were he was going to be injured. His actual stature was smaller than Bennett's is, around 5cm shorter and around the same mass but the concern remains the same, that much like many players who excelled in juniors they just couldn't put it together at the pro level. Bennett hasn't had any injury concerns in the past couple of years which is great though but he needs to work on developing strength, particularly in his lower body.

The risk though is whether he has the frame to do so and avoid injury as in some ways he reminds me a bit of a better Gilbert Brule, a player who was a physical player in juniors but unable to transfer that to the bigger pro game. Personally from what I have seen of Bennett there is no way he should be traded as his potential dwarfs any possible return and would be the type of trade to bite a general manager in the ass in a few years time.
|
Brule was listed at 5'11", 184 and I would bet that's 'optimistic'
Bennett is 6'1" and will easily fill out over 200 lbs. No comparison there whatsoever.
He will have a bigger frame than Toews, though not be quite as tall. But if you want to make comparisons of body types, Toews is similar, Brule isn't.

I actually didn't even think about an offer sheet. Bennett would be ultra vulnerable to one I think.
I still have no idea why he hasn't been signed yet. It should have been done in December.

If someone can find that gif of him roughing up Kesler in the PO's they were standing roughly the same height and Kesler is 6'2. Either way, he's far from Brule territory.

I find it funny when people refer to players being vulnerable to an offer sheet. You do realize that he has to sign/want to go to another city right? Players vulnerability is irrelevant, if they're happy to stay and just need to negotiate a deal, thats usually what they'll do.

Yeah, but if the Flames want to bridge him for $5-7 million and then play him as their 3rd line C and some team comes along and says we think you would be our 1st or 2nd line C, and by the way here is $30 million dollars guaranteed, why wouldn't he sign that offer sheet?
Now, I'm not so sure any team out there would do that, but if they did I don't see how Bennett says "no thanks".

Fair point, but if that unlikely scenario actually happens, the flames match, throw a fake hissy fit about offer sheets and then is happy when it's all said and done.

I love how we always get weird valuations flying all over the place in the off season.
Here's mine... we have seen a few assets immediately flipped in the recent past, like in the situation with Martin Jones. Dallas is clearly the best trading partner for Anaheim, but Anaheim is higher on Bennett. Ok. So, if Anaheim throws a top D at Dallas, would a return to Calgary of 3rd overall and the rights to Nichushkin be enough? Both assets would be expansion draft ineligible.

If anyone watched the Oilers/Ducks series they'll know Sam isn't moving. The Ducks beat the Oilers based on the type of skill Sam delivers. A difficult player to play against that can score at will. The Oilers couldn't handle it in the end.
Sam is far from a lock to be a Perry or a Getzlaf but if he does he is the best shot to take on the Oilers. The more grit against McDavid the better.
Don't kid ourselves. The Oilers as pathetic as they are are back in the game by winning multiple lotteries. We can debate the honor in that in another thread. It is what it is and Sam is what we need to counteract them.
Given his potential I would say he is going no where. He's needed here. Another defenseman in the pipe is not what we need big picture wise.

So we can go on and trade that 3rd overall pick when he has a tough statistical year of his own at age 20? What's the point. Bennett would probably go #1 in this draft had he been eligible. Why don't we let our future elite player continue to develop. Says a lot that an organization would say this about a player after his team got SWEPT by said team. The kid is a special player and some very important minds in hockey agree. We will have (at least) four homegrown elite forwards on our team in 2 or 3 seasons and I can't wait for when it inevitably happens.
