I think the only way you get more than 5 years is if the AAV exceeds 10. Probably need to add 2 for each year.i.e. 6 x 12, 7 x 14 etc.
I should have added this is for the oilers to sign. For an rfa the only way to fet him is like what people have said, max dollars for 5 years. Even then oilers will match and see what happens in free angecy.

5 years with an NMC seems to be the standard for a player lookin to get maximum leverage. If there's no trade restrictions then nothing would stop your current team (which you probably don't like) from getting a massive package from your desired team, which would weaken them at your expense.
Stamkos did this and I want to say Tavares did as well but I could be wrong on that one.

Is McDavid even eligible to sign an extension yet?

McDavid will get 5x$14M+. Every team in the league will be lining up with the same offer, except the Oilers. McDavid can take his pick, wait for Edmonton to match, then he's got a true bidding market when that contract expires. If he doesn't wait until he's a RFA, and wait to see what the offers are, his representation is crap.

Or he ends up liking the Oilers and the direction they're going and doesn't want to handcuff them into not being a Stanley Cup contender.

The Oilers will find their own way to handcuff themselves into NOT being a Stanley Cup contender. They are the Oilers after all.
I think it will be like the Lebron James situation in the NBA. Once he's able to decide his own destination, it will be like "the decision" with the media coverage and ridiculous TV special all over again. Chances are that if the Oilers don't extend him on July 1, teams are going to be ramping up for the opportunity to offer-sheet him. Seriously, watch for teams to clear a TON of cap space leading up to the next off-season if McDavid isn't signed sometime in the next calendar year. It's going to be hilarious.
Personally, I put my money on Arizona. They missed out on franchise talent and homegrown kid Auston Matthews, and Chayka has been eating a lot of dead cap space to be cap compliant for the last few years. Only Bolland's dead contract remains after this year, so they're gearing up to go free agent hunting at some point. I think they're looking at McDavid long and hard as a franchise player for them to target, and since they have a stock of young players already, they can afford to give up the compensation for a max RFA offer-sheet.
I could see it happening...or at least I hope that it does.

Why would McDavid sign the offer sheet from Arizona though?
If there is any franchise that looks ugly enough to at least make Edmonton even slightly appealing, it'd be the Coyotes.

Draisaitl is worth 49 million over 6 years, which would be 2 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd, which would be 8.16 million a year. One would have to think a team would consider that if Kevin Shattenkirk is worth a 1st, a 2nd and a former 2nd who is in the NHL, a PPG center is likely worth two firsts, a 2nd and a 3rd.

The picks always seem like a lot to give up. But if its Baertschi, Klimchuk, Hunter Smith for Draisaitl, wed be insane not to take it. I think offer sheets should be used more. The draft is magic beans.

Only if your franchise is that bad at drafting and development, which is not true for most.

That's a pipe dream. No way his agency allows him to take anything but max. He's already the best offensive player in the game. I doubt he takes a discount. NHLPA would freak.

The RFA compensation rates each year are the baseline of RFA contracts. RFAs aren't true free market players due to the compensation package tied to them. Team's are often reluctant to "trade" for a RFA signing.
So all RFAs, not just Bennett and Ferland (but also McDavid and Drasaitl) are looking at the compensation package.

Has this actually ever happened before? Crosby, no. Ovechkin, no. Stamkos, Kane, Toews, Tavares, all no.
I think McDavid signing for league max is wishful/hopeful thinking of a rival fan base. Make no mistake, he's going to get paid. A lot. But is there actually an example of a player having the league max AAV? There are a lot of top end players that the same argument could apply to, but it never happens.
I could actually see him doing the Crosby contract and signing for 9.7 AAV on a front loaded deal (Crosby's was 8.7 if memory serves).

When Crosby signed for $8.7 million AAV after his ELC, the salary cap was $56.7 million.
Today, the cap is at $73 million. Adjusted for salary cap inflation, Crosby's contract would have been equivalent to $12.5 million AAV today.

Didn't say he would, just saying they'd be likely to try it and not worry about losing the draft picks...plus they would easily have the room for his contract.
It was just a "for instance".

Yeah max deal is wishful thinking for sure. But based on the compensation rates, a 9.9 is a really good deal for him, so I think he'll get at least that.
The thing is, if a team is confident in it's draft history, losing four first round picks can be disasterous, especially if you're a bad team after that trade. Here's the "best" of the first round picks prior to the McDavid draft, assuming a top 5-10 pick:
- Ehlers
- Monahan
- Lindholm
- Scheifele
I would take those four players over one McDavid any day.

The goal in offer sheeting McDavid would be to not finish low in the standings and draft high. Every team in the league would trade four 1st rounders for him.
