Love the photo. Always a great day when Kesler's season is over.

This is what you get when you chummy up with Canucks. It's a lesson for us all.
Wow. Kesler will be 33 in August (Getzlaf and Perry are 32 this month). The old guard, indeed.

Yeah, I can see the ducks window starting to close (Perry and Getzlaf are signed for 4 more seasons and Kesler 5). Will be interesting to see if they try to ship those contracts out before they become less effective as they have some really good Dmen to retool on the fly with.

Can't see it.

They have a really strong young goalie who is only 23, and their entire top 4 D-core is 25 and under with more coming up the pipeline. They are also likely going to get a nice young asset back for Vatanen in the next few weeks.

I can't see their top forwards falling off enough over the next few seasons that their D, goaltending and forwards like Silvferberg/Rackell/Ritchie can't keep them propped up.

Yah I see the Ducks to still be in the Division champion running for the next 3-4 years.

Almost every one of them needs a raise next year or the year after. Their ability to continue to compete is solely a cap-management issue. If they can become like the Sharks and have a few elders making big money while carefully balancing out the rest of the roster, they'll be fine. But this is basically the last year they can have guys like Vermette, Eaves, and Cogliano on the roster.

Problem is if they get a piece back for Vatanen then they will likely lose that piece or Slivferberg. They will be losing a good young player no bones about it.

They have a lot of cap tied up in aging players. It may not be next year, but with money tied up for 4 or 5 years for those players, they have the potential to paint themselves into the same corner LA did. Perry, Getzlaf and Kesler account for 23.6M.

No, they really won't lose anyone important.

Young asset can also mean draft picks or prospects, which is most likely what will happen.

Trade Vatanen

Protect 7-3-1

Getzlaf, Perry, Kelser, Rackell, Silvferberg, Cogliano, Vermette
Lindholm, Fowler, Manson
Gibson

Bieksa will waive his NMC, it will be his only chance to actually stay with the Ducks as Vegas likely won't take him in the ED. If he doesn't waive he gets bought out and then he's gone from Anaheim for sure.

Next off season Bieksa and Stoner both come off the books which on it's own gives the Ducks $7.25 million to extend Fowler and Manson, and they won't need that much to extend those two. Theodore and Montour will get low paying bridge deals likely. Plus if they trade Vatanen they will have his $4.875 to spread around as well.

Believe me, I'd love to be wrong but I don't see a fall from division contention anytime soon for the Ducks. I mean none of this takes into account the fact that Murray is a wizard when it comes to drafting and trades as well.

Life is like a hurricane here in Duckburg
Kesler, Bieksa, Perry, it's a duck-blur!
Can't solve a Rinne
Or rewrite history!

DuckTears! Woo-oo!
Tales of derring-do, bad and good
No Luck Tears! Woo-oo!

D-d-d danger lurks behind you
There's a predator out to find you
What to do, just grab on to some...

DuckTears! Woo-oo!
Tales of derring-do, bad and good
No Luck Tears! Woo-oo!
No conference champ or cup finals, no,
DuckTears! Woo-oo!

Huh? It's DuckTears instead of DuckTales.

You do have to be drunk all the time to write songs for children's programs though.

While the Ducks may get a bit less, um, unlikeable over the coming years their proficiency at drafting & development suggests that they'll be a force in the Pacific despite losing key vets and even with cap constraints.

A short short time ago
I can still remember how
That elimination still makes me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That this could make those Flames fans dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

But Kesler made me vomit
With every cheap shot he'd deliver
Good news on the doorstep
Anaheim wouldn't take one more step

I remember Kesler cried cried
And Getlaf whined, Perry sighed
Something touched me deep inside
The day the Ducks died
So

Bye, bye to the Ducks who just died
thanks for killing the Oilers but your luck has run dry
And to celebrate I was drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day the ducks die
This'll be the day the Ducks die
Yes you gave the Oilers a shove
But i had faith in the hockey Gods above
If the time clock tells you so
I believe in the goal sirens toll
Can your elimination save hockey's soul?
And can you teach me how lose with class?

I'm very happy the Ducks eliminated the Oilers, but it's a "what have you done for me lately" kind of world Bye bye Ducks, I'm happy all over again to see you gone. And crying.
