Taking a while to get to 5000

If Minnesota is really in a bind I'm sure the Flames would take Dubnyk off their hands too.

- Minnesota is either going to lose one really good forward or one really good dman, thanks to the draft.
- They also happen to be facing a salary crunch at the exact same time that some of the players they need to resign (like Nino) would push them way over if they got what they deserve.
- He's not as good as Monahan or even close to Gaudreau (on an off year!), so we can assume he will get somewhere in the 5's.
- Minnesota has already publicly said they are actively listening on offers for Nino, hinting that they are looking for a good beneficial solution to help them out.
- Minnesota is missing both their 1st and 2nd round picks this year.
- Us trading a good young expansion exempt player to them and also take back someone we'd have to protect drops value further.

sooo there is a chance 16th overall might even be enough

As United said, I believe the offer sheet compensation package is good enough. And I feel like with us he will sign in the 1st + 3rd range ( $3,755,233 to $5,632,847), but you pay the 1st + 2nd + 3rd range ( 5,632,847 to $7,510,464) package because it sends MIN the message that we're aiming to sign him long-term (totally are) and big money (the kind of figure they know they can't match).
Minnesota has some very slippery options with Nino.
- They can protect him and lose another good player for nothing, but they are now faced with the task of somehow creating enough cap space to sign him up, and those options are neither desirable or guaranteed. If they protect him, the threat of the offersheet looms large - particularly because it would be after the expansion draft, and teams no longer need to worry about using a protection slot (thanks MIN). Protecting him is probably the worst option because it doesn't solve any of their problems - they're not even guaranteed to keep him.
- They can trade him (preferably to us) and solve some cap/expansion/lack of draft pick problems all at the same time. The good asset management option.
- They can leave him unprotected and potentially lose him for nothing.

Seems like there are several highly or once highly touted young forwards that could be on the market this summer.
Nino
Galchenyuk
Drouin
Nuge
Landeskog
Duchene

Min needs to protect:
F - Parise
F - Koivu
F - Pominville
D - Suter
Others potentially to be protected:
D - Spurgeon
D - Brodin
D - Scandella
D - Dumba
F - Staal
F - Coyle
F - Granlund
F - Niederreiter
Something has to give

I think they just let Las Vegas take a defenseman.
What else are they going to do?
Trade away two defensemen for picks to avoid losing one?

I hate doing proposals but would this get t done?
To Minny: 2017 1st + Lazar
To Calgary: Nino
Fits well for Calgary to trade one protected player for another. Works well for Minny as they get a cheap player that even if exposed likely won't get picked up as there will still be better options to take.

I may be overvaluing the prospect but come on buddy i think you are overvaluing Nino, I do not think he is worth that at all. He may have finally "found" his game but he is no way worth what you were saying.
|
I mid-first rounder in an average draft is probably a 50/50 shot of yielding an impact NHL player like Nino. Kylington is far from a sure thing at this point. The only proven NHL player they would be getting back would be a bottom 6 (Ferland).
I do that trade every day if I am the Flames.

I would imagine Staal will be left unprotected. He had a good bounce back season but they have so many 30+ year old key players that it seems silly to protect him over a younger player. Staal could be a big enough name for the Knights to at least consider as his contract is fair. It's going to be interesting to see how much wheeling and dealing takes place prior to this draft.

They are facing a cap crunch. Sure, they can simply let Vegas take a dman for free and bite the bullet. But look at their RFA's/UFA's this year:
RFA- Granlund
- Neiderreiter
- Folin
- Haula
- Schroeder
UFA
Subtract one d-man from that list, and MIN is still facing a pretty bad cap situation where they will have to move good players just to sign core players. It makes much more sense to try and solve multiple problems with any moves.

I'd have to think there's much more attractive offers than that to entice MIN, if the offer revolves around a 1st round pick and a young player. The 1st would certainly get conversation started, but Lazar is definitely not up there when it comes to "young roster player" and none of our exempt AHL guys are ready.

I know the Flames do not have a 2nd or 3rd so it is unlikely they trade their first (unless they move back to add picks). Even though we lack the 2nd and 3rd I would be open to the Flames moving that pick + if it could bring back a young top line winger or right shot top 4 D 25 or younger. Unless they are targeting Murray, Schneider or a similar long term goalie I do not think they should move the pick for a netminder.
Drouin would fit great with Monahan and Gaudreau imo. Monahan is a legit sniper and Gaudreau and Drouin are highly skilled and would make magic together

I don't know about Minnie but if I'm Treliving I'm all over that. A 24 year old former #5 overall whose proven to be a good player in return for a smaller 22 year old #17 overall whose done far less at the same point, plus an unknown late first round pick?

If Brad play's his hand right the names that are highlighted can be had in a package like for Dougie Hamilton(where we have a advantage) because the GM's of those player's are under pressure to do something.

Brad should be fired if he trades our best young dman which are harder to find for a winger.

What I meant to say is that they can be had for picks, like we got Dougie Hamilton(not trade Dougie Hamilton.)
Sorry about that.

Hamilton may be the best player the Flames have going forward and is under a decent contract - Treliving would be crazy to move him.
ETA: OK, never mind.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Multiple NHL offers on Czech dman Jan Rutta. Edmonton is among the CDN teams with interest, but i don't believe they've tabled offer yet.

Flames are tight lipped, but I'm hearing Calgary is also in on offensive dman Jan Rutta.

Not factual.
Versteeg was injured (groin) for 9 straight games prior to November 23.
Prior to being injured Nov.3, Versteeg saw regular and reasonable PP time, except immediately after he joined the Flames...the first 2 games of the season vs Edmonton.

Just had to check and from the beginning of the season, to that date, Versteeg was 7th in forwards for PP time. Right between Tkachuk and Ferland.
16:35 mins to Brouwers 41:28. That's ugly.
